Note: The following summary is, as a whole, general guidance to the approximate climate that Izuko experiences. It was loosely based off both Iceland's and northern Scotland's climates. Iceland, because that's it's approximate latitude on Pern, and Scotland because it is too an island. Each month will be bolded, based on the current month in play so that the approximate weather conditions for current play can be found easily. One final note, the "average sunshine" category does not necessarily mean time between sunrise and sunset. It's a mix of that, as well as sunshine that is experienced, or not experience due to weather conditions such as clouds, snow, rain, fog, and so on. Enjoy.
Climate Summary
- Cold Season – This is the coldest part of the year, it’s dry (rains occasionally) days are short, and VERY cold! Snow and Icy are frequent this time of the year. Things are bare...i.e most leaves died.
- Warm Wet Season – Weather starts to warm up, green starts to appear on trees, lots of rain showers!! Rain is warm!! Lots of thunder storms! Rainbows.
- Hot Season – Like Igen! Dry hot weather, very little rain!! (relationally of course...it doesn’t get quite as hot)
- Cool Wet Season – cold rain, frequent but not all the time, rain turns to hail, which turns to snow as cold seasons arrives.
Climate by Months
“The most important Gather at Fort is the two-day celebration for Turnover, at the winter solstice. A Pernese Turn consists of 366 Days, or 52 sevendays plus two days. Those two days of Turnover, called Turn’s End and Turn’s beginning. . . “ pg 76 DLG V2
Note, each Pernese Turn is 13 months long, thus each month is 28 days, or 4 sevendays, long, with the two extra days as Turnover.
Month 1 (Turn’s Beginning plus Days 1-28, or 1st four Sevendays, starting at winter solstice); Middle of the “Cold Season”
• Average High – 1-3 degrees C, or 35-37 degrees F
• Average Low – about the same
• Average Precip – 0, zilch, nada
• Average Sunshine – 5-6 hours a day
Month 1 is the middle of the “cold season” . It has the coldest days of the year, and the least amount of sun-shine and rain. All trees, except for the ever-greens, have been stripped clean of their leaves, and the plains are left dry and brittle. Winds are very strong, which can make it feel much colder than what it really is. It is generally recommended to stay inside, and any Turnover celebrations would most likely be conducted inside as well. All animals would more than likely be kept sheltered from the weather.
Month 2 (2nd four sevendays); end of “cold season”
• Average High – 3-5C, 37-40F
• Average Low – 0-3C, 32-37F
• Average Precip – 1-3 inches
• Average Sunshine – 5-7 hours a day
Month 2 is the end of the “cold season”; however don’t let that fool you. As the rest of Pern begins to warm up and start getting rain, so does Izuko. This, however, leads to bitter ice and snow fall, much like the beginning of the season. It’s common to see the grasses white again, and further up in the mountains, it could be possible to even have a mini-blizzard or two. Winds still remain strong, stronger when a storm from the warming south manages to blow in. Towards the end of the month, the snow will turn to a miserable rain, which in the lower levels, might result in minor flooding as the ground hasn’t softened yet. It’s also not uncommon for the temperatures to reach warmer, more late-spring-like levels as the third month draws near.
Month 3 (3rd four sevendays) ; start of the “warm, wet season”
• Average High – 5-9C, or 40-50F
• Average Low – 2-5C, or 37-40F
• Average Precip – upwards of 7-10 inches
• Average Sunshine – 5-7 hours a day
Month 3 and the start of it means the start of more rain, and the gradual warming. The rains can still be chilly at the beginning of the month, but by the time the month is ending, they’re getting warmer and pleasant, beaconing a start of the turn’s life spurts. Trees begin budding, and it’s blossoming flowers may or may not become common. While the days are getting longer, sunshine is still rare because of the constant rain. Rainy days are more frequent than sunny days. Flooding may be more prevalent towards the beginning of the month, but as the sun and rain soften the ground, it’ll be less prevalent by the beginning of the fourth month.
Month 4 (4th four sevendays)
• Average Highs – 9-15C; 50-60F
• Average Lows – 8-13C; 48-55F
• Average Precip – 7-10 inches
• Average Sunshine – 6-8 hours a day
Gone are the days of frost and chill and furs for clothes. The turn is finally bringing weather warm enough to be out. It may still get mildly chilly, but it’s more frequent for it to be pleasantly warm. Mornings tend to be sunny, though by afternoon, there’s bound to be a thunderstorm or two, with a beautiful sunset come evening. Animals are once again out in their pastures and children are out playing. When it rains, it pours though, and there may be more flash flooding as the snow in the mountains begins to melt into the river.
Month 5 ( 5th four sevendays); last sevenday begins the “hot, dry season”
• Average High – 15-25C; 60-75F
• Average Low – 13-15C; 55-60F
• Average Precip – 4-7 inches
• Average Sunshine – 7-9 hours
As the days get longer, they begin to warm up to. The beginning of the month sees the last real rainstorms the island will get for a few months to come. Thankfully, the river is flowing enough that water will never become a problem for Izuko’s inhabitants. Rainshowers begin to become less frequent and sunny days more frequent. Already the days are getting longer than the nights. Winds from the oceans start to shift away from the Island, and by the last week, almost all rain is gone.
Month 6 (6th four seven days) ; “hot, dry season” and Summer Solstice
• Average High – 20-30C; 70-80F
• Average Low – 15-20C; 60-65F
• Average Precip – 1-2 inches
• Average Sunshine – 9-12 hours
Days are suddenly long, and sunny. There’s no longer any wind or rain to offer relief from the heat that the island feels. This month has the hottest days of the Turn, as it also holds the longest day of the turn half way through. Occasionally, a small rain shower may pop up on the southernmost coast, but such occurrences are very rare. As the inhabitants of the island are more acclimated to cooler temperatures, even in these temperatures which were a mild day for them before, can now beacon in heat injuries, if one is not careful to stay hydrated and cool off. The hottest afternoons may even be designated as resting hours, just to keep such things from happening.
Month 7 (7th four sevendays)
• Average High – 20-25C; 70-75F
• Average Low – about the same
• Average Precip – 0-1 inch
• Average Sunshine – 9-12 hours
Much like the month before it, perhaps the only thing that brings relief is the days begin to get shorter again, keeping them from getting quite so hot. Not even the winds will bring rains to the island anymore. And even nights no longer offer a cool relief from the temperatures. Maybe swimming doesn’t seem like such a bad idea after all, but don’t forget the snows of the mountains are still melting, so the waters will still be ice-cold. At least by the end of the month, as the days continue to get shorter, it might be possible to feel a slight breeze or two.
Month 8 (8th four sevendays); half way through, start of “cool, raining season”
• Average – 15-20C; 65-70F
• Average Low – 10-15C; 55-60F
• Average Precip – 0-2inches
• Average Sunshine – 7-10 hours
The tropics are just gearing up to slam mainland Pern with major storms, and the days around Izuko are finally noticeably shorter. Currents shift, and suddenly the breezes return, cooling off both days and nights. While the rains haven’t quite returned, the clouds of passing hurricanes begin to cut sunshine down, helping to cool the island. Harvests are more than likely booming and will be ripe for the pick in just a few more sevendays, leaving the inhabitants well prepared for the rapidly approaching winter. Rains will also start to return near the end of the month, helping to cool things back down again, and offering a relief.
Month 9 (9th four sevendays)
• Average High – 7-10C; 55-65F
• Average Low – 3-10C; 45-65F
• Average Precip – 2-5inches
• Average Sunshine – 5-8 hours
Suddenly you remember why you like the summer months somewhat. Those same tropical storms have suddenly returned to the Weyr, but the days are rapidly getting shorter and cooler, making the rainy days down right miserable. Because the weather is stuck between summer and winter, temperatures vary greatly. At least the harvest gets picked before the still swollen river takes in even more rain.
Month 10/11 (10th and 11th four sevendays)
• Average High – 7C; 55F
• Average Low – 3-7C; 45-55F
• Average Precip – 4-7inches
• Average sunshine – 5-7 hours
Nights are officially longer than days now, leaving sunshine rare enough as it is. To make matters worse, the weyr seems to be covered in a perpetual mist and rainshower. Days never get much warmer than a steady chill, but nights are beginning to cool off rapidly. Heavier storms lead to cooler temperatures and the arrival of hail, even sleet. It’s merely a reminder that the dreaded winter weather is about to return. By the end of the 11th month, sleet and frozen rain are the common occurrences, and finally the temperatures start to rapidly drop.
Month 12 (12th four sevendays); start of “cold season”
• Average High – 3-5C; 45-50F
• Average Low – 0-3C; 32-40F
• Average Precip – 0-3inches
• Average Sunshine – 4-7hours
Winter arrives, finally. The winter storms travel down over the ocean from the snowy wastes, recovery the mountains in a bright white layer of snow. Down by the coast, it’s still a miserable sleet and frozen rain for another week or so, until finally the winds shift in just a way that precipitation begins to miss the island for another four months. But the winds begin to stick around. Herders finally have to re-shelter their animals and it’s time to stick indoors.
Month 13 (13th four sevendays, last 28 days, and Turn’s End)
• Average High – 0-3C; 32-40F
• Average low – below freezing; 25-30C
• Average Precip – 0
• Average sunshine – 4-6 hours
Ice begins its dominance over the island, the river freezing over some, and an icy bitterness to the wind. To spend time outside is to more than likely lose a finger, or perhaps even die. Winds are sharp and painful, and even though the next month will be just as cold, as the new Turn begins, the days for the next two months will be unpleasant all together. So cold, in fact, that even Thread, should it ever make its return, might not survive its decent to the land. Turn’s End will most definitely be conducted inside.
