Persona information (Updated: January 11, 2011)
Name: N'ean (Nirean)
Age: 19 (Birthdate: 1145.09.02)
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual (However, she doesn't like the idea of being forced to choose one or the other. She will openly flirt with women, and if asked will say she's interested in both men and women.)
Rank: Searchrider
Birthplace: Ista Weyr
Family: Mother Lynnare, greenrider at Ista Weyr; deceased following the death of her dragon during the plague.
Father S'dan, brownrider; also deceased after dragon's death.
Foster-mother Tiet cared for Nirean from birth, now a kitchen hand at the Beastcraft Hall.
"Foster-Father" Kallan, Journeyman Baker.
Signifigant others: None
Personality: Nirean was a Weyrbrat, and the image brought to mind by that rank couldn't have suited her more. She was a bright, energetic child who knew when to follow the rules-but also when she could get away with not doing what she's told. She doesn't like being constrained, and has quite the stubborn streak. She was raised with the Weyr attitude that women are very close to being the equal of men. She is willful, but not stupid or obtuse, which usually meant that she was the ringleader of whatever the 'Brats were doing that was against the rules. Though, her pranks have became much more sophisticated as she grew.
She never took well to learning letters and histories, mostly because they bored her. She has very pretty penmanship and reads well, but copying things for a living is something Nirean could never imagine. Nirean loves learning practical things, like knowing how to knead yeast into the dough so that it rises correctly. This was why she chose the Baker craft. She was actually able to curb her playful impulses enough to work well in the kitchen.
Under Tiet's care Nirean might have been tamed a little bit, but being turned over to Kallan's inexperience (and indifference) to raising children, she only became less controlled. She pretty much did what she wished. She really only followed the rules when she felt like it, or when breaking them meant certain punishment (instead of just possible punishment). Her resentment at being told she was supposed to Stand as a Candidate had only made her more prone to practical jokes and rebellion.
Nirean is also an extremely prideful young woman, though she probably wouldn't admit it. She only barely tolerates most people who come from outside the Weyr. She finds their ways completely backward and laughable. In Nirean's opinion, anyone who wasn't raised in a Weyr is probably dull and stupid. Certainly anyone with any sense who grew up in a Hall or Hold would eventually find their way to the Weyr anyway, if only to find themselves a haven.
Events in Nirean’s life led to her being more responsible. Her involvement in the Weyrleader’s arrest and in trying to help the blind goldrider Ardalae instilled in her a recognition that order and rules are often necessary. She still says exactly what’s on her mind, often regardless of the consequences. She’s come to realize that sometimes, people need to put the Weyr’s needs above their own. Even so, and even after Impression, Nirean still hates anyone’s attempt to control her or force her to do something.
The disaster and the holder attacks on Igen Weyr have only served to make N'ean angry and cynical. Gone is the brat who would play jokes and run rapant through the Weyr. Her opinion of Holdbred people has only worsened due to the way the Weyr has been treated by the holders of Igen. She rarely smiles anymore, and most of the time can be seen with an annoyed and angry expression on her face.
Physical description: N'ean looks are nothing special. She has intelligent-looking hazel eyes, which she is always blinking (her eyes are very sensitive to bright sunlight). Good, straight teeth had the misfortune to be set on a somewhat crooked upper jaw, which gives her a lop-sided smile that thin lips do nothing to help. She has a pale complexion that is often reddened by the heat of the ovens. Her dark brown, wavy hair used to be long, but is now kept at just above shoulder-length. An accident with an open flame when she had just started as an Apprentice Baker left her with short-cropped hair and she has kept it short ever since.
N'ean is of average height, but a little on the scrawny side with an edgy, nervous habit of clenching and unclenching the muscles in her legs no matter what she's doing. This has occasionally caused her problems with leg-cramps. N'ean wears tunics and trousers pretty much all the time. This really started after Tiet left, and could no longer make her wear skirts, and Kallan never did break her of the habit.
History: Nirean was born to a green and a brownrider at Ista Weyr, and was raised by a kitchen worker throughout her childhood. She showed a strong aptitude for working in the kitchens, and was apprenticed to a Journeyman Baker when she was eleven. After the plague left Ista nearly deserted and Nirean's little-known (but fondly imagined) parents dead, Nirean was tempted to take the offer to move to the Baker Hall. The Journeyman she was apprenticed to convinced her to stay at Ista, renamed TriStar, with him, as she would have little chance for advancement in the male-dominated world of crafting.
Of course, as the child of dragonriders she eventually had to become a Candidate. With reluctance, Nirean became a Candidate at the age of 12. It wasn't that Nirean didn't want to ride a dragon; she just resented that she basically had no choice. She really loved baking, and disliked the possibility of having to leave the craft. However, each time she's stood she's always hoped a dragon would choose her; she'd just never admit that to anyone.
She was in a small argument with the goldrider Ardalae, and unknowingly helped cement the goldrider’s opinion that she didn’t belong at the Weyr. It wasn’t until a couple sevenday after the argument that Nirean learned just how troubled Ardalae was. After a conversation that, surprisingly involved Fraith speaking directly to Nirean, the candidate decided to bring the information she learned about Ardalae’s situation to the Weyrwoman Second. She actually took the responsible course of action.
Earlier in the day that she had the second conversation with Ardalae, Elan had come to her with questions about the arrest of the Weyrleaders. She volunteered to help, and was told that they were keeping the whole thing legal, which meant involving only the Weyrguard in the actual arrest. Even so, on the day of the arrest, Nirean felt she should be there when it was announced to try to resolve any issues anyone might have. She ended up in an argument with greenrider Lorina, but in her mind it turned out alright. She helped make sure justice was served in an orderly fashion.
Before the Hatching of Authanth's second clutch, T'ren met with all of the Candidates. In Nirean's meeting, T'ren asked her about Nirean's statements that she actually didn't want to be a rider, and that she wanted to stay a baker. She told him that she would seriously think over what she wants before making a decision about standing at this Hatching. After much thought, she's decided that she will Stand, and she doesn't care if everyone knows she wants to be a dragonrider.
Nirean stood at the Hatching of Authanth’s second clutch hoping that she would Impress this time. Like the other girls, she stood around the gold, but her attention was on the other eggs. Then the gold, who had been quite unruly at the beginning, started to pay very close attention to her. She let herself wonder and then hope that she would actually Impress the gold. Instead, a blue that had hatched at the beginning yet had hung back, finally raced toward Nirean. {{Nirean mine,}} the blue had said. {{Can we go now?}} Nirean had grinned and lead the little blue, Canorth, off the Sands to be fed. She was a dragonrider.
Within the first sevenday of the hatching, Canorth had convinced Nirean that she should really change her name to an honorific. He explained that if all the other riders had honorific names, she should too. Nirean hadn’t really wanted to do it, but eventually Canorth had convinced her. So after asking V’yel she changed her name to N’ean. The apostrophe isn’t really necessary, but if she didn’t have it Canorth wouldn’t be satisfied. He might not be able to read, but he can see the name in her head when she thought about it.
N'ean was doing quite well as a weyrling; she and Canorth seemed to be well paired. Both of them are strong willed and opinionated, but they work well together. She and Canorth managed to escape the disaster at Tristar unscathed, at least physically. They were both, understandably, upset by the quick move. However it was the holder attacks that really set N'ean off. She couldn't understand why the Holders would hate them so much. They were there to help Pern; they were the only line of defense between the people of Pern and Thread, and she knew Thread would come back.
N'ean is quite glad that they are moving away from Igen and to Izoku. As far as she is concerned, the rest of Pern can be left to itself.
N'ean was not at all pleased when Tria, a glass smith, was allowed to stay at the Weyr. Matters were made even worse when Canorth Searched the former glass smith. It was with great reluctance and insistence from Canorth, that N'ean even told Tria that she could Stand at the next hatching.
