Personality: One of the most noticeable things about Gilnol is his inability to sing. It’s not that he can’t hit the right pitch, because he can. However, his voice just doesn’t sound good. His speaking voice is gravelly and low-pitched, which makes his singing voice gravelly and unpleasant. He pretty much always sounds like he’s just getting over a sore throat. Gilnol has always been a bit embarrassed about his voice, and he won’t ever join in any singing, even if it’s informal without another harper in sight. He’s not too fond of discussing his voice, either.
Gilnol is, overall, a shy and quiet man. He never raises his voice in anger, or even excitement. He tends to keep himself to himself, expressing very little to anyone else. His outlet for expression is, most obviously, his music. He plays the guitar well, but has a real talent for and a great love of the lap harp. He can often be found twiddling away at his harp, whether he’s alone or in public.
The disaster and the death of so much of his family left Gilnol a mess. It was bad enough that his sister died. Actually leaving his wife to die after watching his daughter die is what really tore him apart. He has never been able to forgive himself for leaving them. He was supposed to protect them, and he failed. He's become somewhat mad, and completely obsessed with the events of that day.
Physical description: Gilnol is an average looking man. He is average height, average weight, with average and proportional features. He has dark tan skin and dark brown eyes. His hair is a dark brown that he keeps at shoulder-length. He has calluses on his fingers from playing his instruments, and his hands are kept in excellent condition.
After the disaster and the deaths of his wife, daughter, and sister, Gilnol fell into a very deep depression. He stopped eating regularly, and really never got himself back together. Because of this, he became quite gaunt looking, and even turns after the earthquake he still looks far too thin to be healthy.
History: Gilnol was born at the Harper Hall, the second child of two Harpers. Even as a child it was clear he had an ear for music, so he began to learn whatever he could from an early age. By the time his younger sister was born, and Gilnol was 7 turns old, he had learned enough to be able to tell the difference between instruments just by listening to them. He could also sing with often excellent pitch. Being a child in the Harper Hall meant being surrounded by music, so he just absorbed what he heard. However, even at such a young age it was clear he’d never have a good singing voice. His parents weren’t bothered by this, and were just proud he had taken an interest in harpering at such a young age.
When it came time to officially apprentice, Gilnol naturally ended up in the Harper Craft. He wasn’t particularly talented in much of the craft, just dedicated. He loved music, and so he learned everything he could. A few turns into his apprenticeship his parents acquired a canine, which his younger sister named Blackie. The pup was the runt of a litter of 10. The owner of the pup’s mother was a trader who had been passing through the Harper Hall about a sevenday after the birth. Bornol and Gilvna offered to take the pup off the trader’s hands as he had been having a hard time making sure it got fed. So the family took in the pup and trained it. As soon as he was old enough, Blackie was used for pest control in the Hall. Gilnol took quite a liking to Blackie and the canine became his.
Around the same time Gilnol met a new Apprentice Harper who had come from a cothold near Nabol named Ciafara. The two spent a good turn together in their classes before either one got up the courage to speak to the other. It was Ciafara who spoke first, and from that first conversation on they’ve gotten on well.
While the Weyrs were ravaged by the Plague, Gilnol and Ciafara were busy falling in love and Ciafara wound up pregnant. The two were handfasted and Ciafara gave birth to Gilnara. The two continued to live on glad that the Plague hadn’t hit anyone they knew personally. Just before Gilnara was born, Gilnol had walked the tables to become a Journeyman.
Then about when Gilnol was about 21, Gilnol’s sister Borna was Searched for the clutches that were sitting at the new Tristar’s Sands. She didn’t Impress from either the Ista or Igen clutches, but she stayed at the Weyr as a Candidate. About a turn after that, Gilnol convinced the rest of his family to join Borna at Tristar. So at the age of 22, Gilnol’s and his family, with the exception of Bilnoa who was happy as a Journeyman Harper at Nerat, all left to Tristar.
Once they all got to Tristar, Gilnol’s father acquainted them with the rest of his extended family that are living in Tristar. Now, Gilnol and his family are settled. They’ve made Tristar their home.
Gilnol watched the Hatching with his family, N’nes, Cyra and Gila. He cheered as he saw his sister Borna Impress a green.
During the earthquake, Ciafara and Gilnol had been with their daughter, Gilnara, and canine, Blackie, playing a game of chase. Gilnara was crushed by falling debris and Ciafara had been emotionally shattered. She had refused to leave her daughter, even though she saw that Gilnara was dead. Blackie was too large to be transported out, so she and the canine stayed with Gilnara’s damaged body. Ciafara had all but physically forced Gilnol to save himself, but had refused any help herself. It was the hardest thing he had ever done, leaving his family behind while running to a dragon to be taken out of Tristar. Every day he regrets his decision.
When he arrived in Igen he was informed that his sister also died in the volcano. He was relieved his parents made it through, but it was small comfort compared to the rest of the disaster. His parents ended up leaving the Weyr, moving to join his other sister in Nerat Hold. Gilnol considered doing the same, but he couldn't bring himself to leave Igen. He had to stay and make sure everything that happened to the dragonriders was recorded, no matter how much it pained him to remain. It was his just punnishment for failing his family so miserably.
The recording of the disaster, as well as the events at Igen and eventually at Izoku, has become something of an obsession for Gilnol. It's the day of the disaster itself, however, that Gilnol focusses on. Almost immediately after the disaster, he started asking everyone at the Weyr to give him detailed descriptions of what they saw and heard. He now has reemes of notes about that day and he has begun composing what he hopes is his master work.
