Personality: Kalene is spoiled through and through. As the youngest of Yelton’s three daughters, she was always babied and given everything she asked for. She’s used to always getting her way, and she won’t respond well to being told ‘no.’ Part of the problem is that she has no idea what goes into making her all her pretty dresses and keeping her room clean, and so on. As the younger daughter she was never made to help with the actual running of the Hold. She saw drudges going about their work, of course, but Kalene has no real understanding of just how difficult ‘mundane’ tasks can be.
She’s also an extremely proud and haughty young woman. She is a ranker and she knows it. What’s more, she’ll make sure everyone around her knows it too. She doesn’t speak about it, but then she doesn’t have to. She just lives it. She uses a level of familiarity when speaking to others of high rank that other candidates generally wouldn’t use. Kalene will also simply ignore certain people, at least as much as she can. If she does have to speak to someone of what she considers lower rank, she generally treats them like idiots. She’ll also tend to order them about and will freely criticize them if she feels it is necessary.
The only way in which Kalene is at all toughened is with regards to cold weather. Even the coddled daughter of the Lord Holder has had to face the outdoors during a few freezing cold winters. Though all of the few times Kalene ever left the warmth of the Hold during winter, she was always bundled in the warmest clothing available. She can’t really handle hot weather. She finds it exhausting and totally unsuitable.
While Impressing the brown Zunith was a shock, it didn't lessen Kalene's sense of entitlement. In fact, she ended up thinking that perhaps Impressing a brown was more special than getting a gold. After all, she is very nearly the only woman to have Impressed a brown. The disaster, and her age, have made her less useless. Her turns at the Weyr have taught her some practical skills, though she still resents having to perform any menial task.
The death of Zunith left her empty, but Kalene's personality was far too firey for her to become a quiet dragonless woman. No, Kalene has managed to turn all that pain into a fierce anger. She hates dragons on the one hand, but on the other she has no where else to go. The fact that her parents turned her away only fueled her hatered of pretty much everyone and everything.
Physical description: Kalene has fair skin that doesn’t really tan so much as burn. She has blue eyes that are startlingly bright and very proportional to the rest of her face. Her nose is small and narrow, what some would call ‘cute.’ Kalene’s dark brown hair is kept long and well maintained so that it’s always silky smooth. She always wears well made clothing of good-quality material. Most of the clothing she owned before coming to the Weyr was heavy for the cold of the High Reaches, but her parents purchased new clothing of lighter material from the Weavercraft after she went to Tristar. She wears jewelry every day, all of it metal, and most of it contains some kind of precious stone.
Most of her clothing was distroyed during the earthquake and volcano at Tristar, however she did manage to salvage a couple outfits. Also, as a way of thrusting Kalene from their lives completely, her parents sent all of her clothing, including the cold-weather clothing, to Igen Weyr while she was there. Even after Zunith's death, Kalene refuses to wear anything less than her own expensive garments, and she still wears jewelry every day.

When Yarlene produced a male child just a turn after the handfasting her position as the future Lady Holder of the High Reaches was secured. Now even the remote possibility that Kalene might end up having to continue the line and become Lady Holder was gone. When Kalene was barely 12, Dacie was handfasted and also had a child, though hers was a girl.
When she had her first moonday, her mother had purchased her a flit egg to mark the occasion. She had demanded that it be a gold firelizard egg; nothing else would be good enough for her. Sure enough her mother returned with a firelizard egg which hatched Shimmer. Even though Shimmer is hers, she had a lot of help in caring for the gold while still at the Hold. Other people usually bathed and oiled Shimmer, though Kalene did feed the flit herself.
It was around the time that Kalene turned 15 that parents started brokering the question of handfasting. She staunchly refused, even though both of her sisters were married. Both of her sisters now had a few children each, and she wanted no part of it. Kalene had seen how uncomfortable her sisters had been during their pregnancies, though she hadn’t seen the delivery and she had no idea what the work of raising a child was. She just knew she didn’t want to have to bother with it. Her parents had given in and Kalene had been allowed to continue to do whatever she wished.
Then, when she was 17, there was a Hatching at Tristar and the Lord and Lady Holders of Pern had been invited. Her parents had decided to take her and her eldest sister with them. Kalene had been excited to see the Weyr and to finally meet other people that she considered equal to herself. She hoped she might find some friends among the children of the other Lord Holders. Instead Kalene was Searched.
Nothing had happened until they were all climbing onto the dragons to make their way back to the High Reaches. She’d been somewhat annoyed that they had been transported using blue and brown dragons anyway. Surely they deserved to be transported on gold and bronze. Her parents had explained that there were a limited number of dragons because of the Plague, and that had mollified her somewhat. The blue dragon, K’levan’s Tuegath, turned to look at her then turned back around. He must have said something to his rider, because next thing she knew the bluerider had been saying something about her going to see the new Candidatemaster. She was quite excited at the possibility of Impressing the next gold dragon, and so she agreed to be a Candidate.
Kalene didn't Impress the gold, and in fact she ended up staying at Tristar for an entire turn without Impressing. During the volcano disaster, it was K'levan who resuced her, though he hadn't recognized her. For awhile after the disaster, even Kalene was king and good-natured to those around her. The Weyr had suffered great loss and this was the first time Kalene had been around any sort of hardship. She considered going back to High Reaches, but she just couldn't do it. Kalene didn't want to end up completely useless in her life and she knew that's exactly what would happen if she returned to the Hold. Besides, there was always a chance of her Impressing gold.
When she Impressed Zunith, Kalene was horrified. She wasn't some manly, low-born woman to end up with such a dragon. Of course, the love that Zunith had for Kalene quickly eroded her disgust and she accepted that Zunith was hers. It wasn't long after her Impression that Kalene became her old, self, again ordering people about and demanding people recognized her rank.
Once that Zunith was older, Kalene had high hopes for him, and for her. The fact that the current Weyrleader rides a brown has caused Kalene to re-think the possibilities of riding a brown.
Then not long after moving to Izoku, the unthinkable happened. Zunith had been trying to play a trick on Kalene when everything went horribly wrong. He'd decided to between from behind Kalene to appear in front of her while his rider had been taking a walk on the Plateau. He managed the betweening without any trouble, but misjudged his altitude when he came back. He careened into the cliffs, dieing instantly. Kalene was left completely distraught and nearly managed to kill herself.
At first Kalene wanted to leave Izoku, feeling that there was nothing left at the Weyr for her. She pleaeded with her parents to take her back to High Reaches, but for once they refused her wishes. They had become quite opposed to the Weyr, having refused to tithe in the turns that the dragonriders were at Igen. She was, they determined, part of the dragonrider's world. Though it saddened them to know that their daughter had suffered such a tragedy, they determined it was up to the other riders to take care of her now. So now Kalene is stuck at the Weyr.
After another plea to return home, Kalene's parents accepted her plea and she went out on one of the supply ships that had come in Month 12 to go home and live a Holder's life once more, probably to be married off in her future to a high ranking Holder. Only time would tell if Shimmer can replace Zunith's love for her and help her smile again...

If she was convinced that they should do something, Zunith would go along with it. That being said, he never shirked off hard work. He refrained from playing any games when there was work that needs to be done.
Physical description: Zunith was a large brown, close to the size of most small bronzes. He was muscular, and yet not so bulky as to be clumsy. He had well proportioned wings and tail, which aided his physical abilities. His coloring, on the other hand, clearly marked him as a brown. He was the color of dirt over his entire body.

Physical description: Shimmer is a deep golden color with streaks of a brighter gold running through her entire body. She is medium sized for a gold flit and has a rather muscular frame. She isn’t the most agile of creatures, but she makes up for it in speed.
