Personality: Shiada is a bit of a perfectionist, and a workaholic. If she let herself, Shiada would never leave the dragon infirmary. During the Plague, this overly strong work ethic meant that she stopped talking to or even seeing those she loved. After the Plague ended, she realized what she had done, and vowed never to do it again. She now forces herself to keep in touch with those of her friend and family that she can. She has even been known to take the occasional day off.
Shiada is a very stubborn young woman, unwilling to give a finger-length for anyone. She knows she has occasionally bullied her husband into doing things, such as moving to Tristar. However, she tries not to do this anymore and has been working on developing compromises with Vacnor. This stubbornness does mean that once she’s decided something with regards to her children, no amount of wining or begging on their part will change her mind. Once her mind is set, there’s no shaking it.
With this stubbornness is an unwillingness to get shaken up, or panic. She has a rather solid demeanor anyway, but her iron will has simply added to it. Shiada does not panic; she does not show fear. She simply refuses to let herself become afraid of what might happen, or even of what is happening. Instead Shiada focuses on finding a solution; she will work hard until she can fix whatever it is that needs fixing.
She also has a very gentle and kind aspect to her nature. Shiada can be a very understanding woman, particularly when it comes to how people react when in pain, physical or emotional. Having seen so much of it, Shiada is well aware that people, and dragons, respond in such different ways. She is sympathetic to anyone she thinks might be hurting, whether they are doing their best to hide it or crying out at the top of their lungs. This combined with Shiada’s fix-it nature means that she has a particular drive to heal an individual’s pain. She likes to think that every kind of pain can be solved one way or another, and that she can find the way to fix it.
Physical description: Shiada stands at about 5’4” and has a chubby build. She isn’t fat, just chubby. The only way Shiada would ever lose those few extra pounds would be if she were forced to get herself into perfect shape. She has always been on the big side, and after three children there are just some parts of her body that are going to remain too big. Shiada has dark tan skin. She has brown hair with copper highlights, like her mother, that she keeps at shoulder length. Shiada’s eyes are a dark brown and are probably her best physical asset. Her nose is a little on the wide and flat side. Her ears are a bit big, and stick out slightly from her face. Shiada is neither a beauty, nor plain. She’s just somewhere in between. Shiada always wears practical clothing, as she never knows when she might be called into the dragon infirmary. She also keeps band for her hair with her all the time, just in case.
History: Shiada was born the second child to a Baker and a Healer at Fort Hold. She grew up with sisters, all of them quite close to her in age. She and her sisters played together constantly, pretending to be Lady Holders, or Weyrwomen. Of course, they didn’t always get along. She and her youngest sister, Shilmiada, were almost always arguing over who got to be who. Part of the problem could have been the fact that Shiada always made Shilmiada be a drudge, but Shiada saw no reason why the youngest of them shouldn’t get the worst job.
As she grew up, it became clear she and her sisters all had an affinity for the Healer craft. In particular, they weren’t easily panicked. They all experienced childhood illness and injury, and those who were well whenever injury or illness occurred were generally quite helpful in caring for the others. Instead of crying or worrying, Shiada and her sisters would help out in whatever ways their parents ordered. It was no surprise when the eldest of them, Shilada, apprenticed as a Healer at the young age of 12. And a turn later, when Shiada was 12, she apprenticed as a Healer at the Healer Hall.
Shiada was quite content to continue in that craft, but two turns into her apprenticeship a dragon from Fort Weyr Searched her. She considered turning it down, but for the surprising realization that she had the ability to Hear All Dragons. The night the rider had arrived, Shiada had been thinking over her choices to leave or stay, when she heard the blue dragon speaking in her head. She was surprised, and yet not at all afraid. The blue told her she should go to the Weyr; she was easy to talk to. When she told the searchrider what the blue had told her, the rider realized what she could do. He agreed that she belonged in a Weyr.
So Shiada left to Fort Weyr on the back of a blue dragon, ready to start out a new life. Once she got to Fort, it became apparent she would be better suited in the Dragonhealing craft while she waited to Impress. So she officially apprenticed in that craft, and found that she was particularly suited to it and quite enjoyed it. The fact that she could speak to any dragon easily meant that she could communicate with her patients as well as if they were human.
Shiada met a young Beastcrafter named Vacnor while she was at Fort Weyr, and the two became friends. Over a short while, the friendship developed into something much more, and the two began seeing each other romantically. When she was at the age of 17, Vacnor asked whether she wanted to make their relationship permanent and she agreed. They were handfasted without any ceremony.
The only thing they did to celebrate this occasion was buy two flit eggs. One was supposed to be green and the other brown; Vacnor would Impress the brown and she would Impress the green. Unfortunately for Vacnor, he was quite busy with an injured herdbeast when the eggs hatched. Shiada ended up Impressing both the green, and blue flits that hatched, though she still named them after Vacnor and herself.
Almost two turns after the two were handfasted, a couple things happened at once. Shiada walked the tables to become a Journeywoman Dragonhealer, and she gave birth to their first son, Shicnor. She and Vacnor were some of the happiest people in Pern. Shiada didn’t even care that she hadn’t Impressed a dragon yet. She had her husband, her flits, and now her precious baby boy.
But all things must come to an end. Little more than a turn after Shicnor was born, the Plague started. Shiada was extremely worried her two flits would succumb to the illness, but she was lucky and they were fine. The rest of what happened during the Plague was a nightmare. Dragons were falling ill and dying, with their riders soon to follow. Nothing any of the Dragonhealers did stopped the illness, and no one found a cure. They were forced to treat the symptoms, and wait until the illness stopped on its own.
During the two turns in which the Plague ravaged Pern, Shiada was a mess. She was constantly hearing the mental cries of the dying dragons and flits at the Weyr. She got little rest, and felt that she had to spend as much time as she could to help stop all the death. She poured herself into her work, and all but completely neglected her husband and son. Luckily the creche took care of her son, but Shiada’s relationship with Vacnor was strained during this time. They didn’t argue; she wasn’t around enough for that. The two just drew apart. Shiada also lost touch with the rest of her family, and didn’t make contact with her parents or any of her sisters during the entire two turns of the Plague.
After the last dragon in Fort Weyr went between, their riders either following them or leaving to Holds or Halls, and T’ren left to Tristar, Shiada was emotionally and physically drained. She left Fort Weyr and, along with her husband and son, ventured to the Fort Hold. She wasn’t sure she wanted to practice her craft any longer; not after seeing and feeling so much death. Vacnor’s next Journeyman assignment was Fort Hold, so Shiada followed.
She and Vacnor patched up their relationship and Shiada fell back into touch with her family. She found out that her youngest sister had married a dragonless man. He had lost his dragon during the Plague, but Shilmiada was apparently trying to nurse him back to health. She also found out that her Uncle Sh’dar’s dragon had died and that he had followed. She hadn’t known her uncle well, and had only met him once, but she still felt the loss.
But even though Shiada was happy and getting reacquainted with her family, she was discontent with her life. She needed to be around dragons. She might not be a rider, but she was a Dragonhealer who could hear all dragons. She belonged in a Weyr. So after much discussion, and a bit of bullying, Shiada convinced her husband to move again, this time to the newly named Tristar Weyr. So at the age of 24, Shiada packed up and moved for what she hoped would be the last time in her life.
While at Tristar, Shiada and Vacnor were quite happy. She gave birth to her other two children, both of whom she loves dearly. They spent quite a bit of time at the creche, but at least they were well taken care of.
When Shiada heard that a Master Dragonhealer is coming to Tristar she was relieved. It was nice to have a Master around, especially since there were so many dragons. Though they got off to a slightly rough start, she and Master Gila ended up getting along quite well. As long as Gila remembered not to treat Shiada like an idiot apprentice, things were fine.
At the Gather, Shiada purchased two more flit eggs from Caid. Early in the morning on the third day of the Gather, she went to the Hold to pick them up. Not long after she got back to the Weyr, Shayna went into labor and she helped out the Healers by communicating with the dragons involved. It wasn’t long after she was done helping out with the birth that her flit eggs started to hatch. She barely made it in time to Impress the green and bronze flits that emerged. She named them after her two oldest children.
A few days after Shayna gave birth, and her flit eggs hatched, Shiada went to L’rai with a suggestion. She thought that perhaps the dragons should be taught to call to her, specifically, whenever there was a problem. In the case of Shayna’s birth, they were lucky that she was there. Galith hadn’t told anyone where Shayna was when he’d called out to the Weyr for help. As a result, the healer Gindalina hadn’t known where to go. Luckily Shiada was at the Weyr and had been able to sort everything out. Chances are Shiada would always be involved whenever a dragon was asking for help anyway, so Shiada figured they might as well learn to call her, so that they knew that at least one person heard them and could respond if need be. L’rai accepted her suggestion and the wings and current Weyrlings are all going to be trained to do this. It’s also been added into Weyrling training for the future.
At the Hatching of the Little Dangers weyrlings, Shiada was made aware of the problem with Forley, Aloran and Alinda from Vas. She’d been watching over the firelizards of the candidates in the dragon infirmary at the time. She rushed in and tried to help the WLMs sort it all out. Slapping Aloran probably hadn’t helped much, but it had made her feel better. As the ordeal dragged out she became angrier and angrier with Aloran. She couldn’t understand how someone could reject such a wonderful thing as Impression. What’s more, she suddenly became aware of a small part of her that was jealous that she’d never Impressed a dragon.
On the day of the volcano, Shiada did all she could to help with the dragons. She made sure her children were safely taken to Igen, then after seeing that there was nothing she could do at Tristar, went to Igen herself. There she helped with injured dragons and in trying to keep them calm. Shiada didn't discover that her husband Vacnor had died until after some of the chaos had dissipated. She had no idea how to tell her children that their father was dead, especially since he had been their primary parent for so long. It was a sevenday before she could bring herself to tell them that their father wouldn't be returning. She did all she could to lessen their pain, but it was difficult since she was grieving too. It didn't help that Gila and Naremz didn't make it out of the volcano. Shiada was perhaps the most maternal she had ever been during this time, putting her own emotions second to the needs of her children.
In time they moved on, making their life in Igen, and now Izoku. Shiada still works much more than she should, and now her children spend most of their time in the creche. Often one or more of the firelizards will be with them, keeping an eye out for Shiada.
