Name: R'en (Renthan)
Pronunciation: REN (REN-thun)
Age: 26 (1338.07.08)
Orientation: Hetero
Rank: Jr Journeyman Healer/Green Rider
Birthplace: Telgar Hold
Father - Lyrthan, 50, Lord Holder of Telgar Hold (future)
Mother - Renna, 45, Lady Holder of Telgar Hold (future)
Siblings - Thanyr (older brother, deceased), Lyrnna (younger sister) (future)
Significant others - Searchrider Ekaterina of Green Tigrith, Searchrider Aquila of Blue Duhath
Physical appearance: R'en is tall, standing just under six feet, two inches, yet his body is slightly stocky if not leaning a tad towards athletic. His brown hair is usually free-flowing and stirs in the breeze, but he keeps it short to the nape of his neck. His eyes are a bright blue, his skin bordering on a light tanned complexion. Arched eyebrows that aren't too thin nor too thick; defined cheekbones, nose, chin, and a mouth neither small nor large all complement his face.
R'en prefers clothing that is loose, comfortable, and presents him in the best light possible, but not overly flashy; just enough to attract the wandering eye of a female. He favors colors ranging from a vibrant red to a bright yellow, even a light lavender or a salmon pink color, all the way to a specific shade of green, a bright blue, and black; but will eschew the more earthen tones and grays.
Personality: Insightful, roguish, intelligent, flirt; all of these adjectives can accurately describe R'en. If one were to make the comment that he is of a split, yet co-equal, personality, or even make the suggestion he is one notch above a Bitran, that person would be spot-on. R'en is the type of person who is utterly notorious for flirting with women - and only those he finds attractive in his opinion - and will do anything and say anything just to charm them, but this often backfires as it's been known to irritate his fellow wingmates and Healers.
Contrary to what people see him as, R'en is quite intelligent as he excels at math, science, and history; all of which has not only defined his path as a Healer, but also has helped to develop a keen sense of insight. This insightfulness has served him well, especially when tackling the most difficult medical cases...or when faced with an equally difficult task and has to make a hard decision that hopefully won't affect the lives of those he truly cares for.
Biography: Renthan, or "Ren" as he preferred, was the second child of three, and while growing up, didn't care much for being the "middle child". In spite of his rough-and-tumble youth with the other lads, Renthan was often teased for what many children dubbed as a "bookworm", or a "rich spoiled Holdbrat" as his parents were the Lord and Lady Holder of Telgar, and therefore was given the luxury of studying under the finest tutors on the continent. Furthermore, his maternal grandparents had ties to the Trading community, and Renthan soon learned the art of negotiation...not to mention how to cheat at the occasional game of dragon poker. However, because of his "royalty", Renthan felt it was only his right to chase the girls since he would someday be given a high position by his older brother, whom was in line to be the next Lord Holder. Yet much to his surprise, the young lasses were just as eager to tease him. This, however, would not deter him, as the boy continued his "skirt-chasing" until it was time for him to decide upon a Craft, a long-standing custom for all children of Holders.
Who could say what sort of decision-making skills or logic Renthan used, but he felt all of that reading and such would be a natural fit for the Healing profession. In his mind, he reasoned that the knowledge he had learned would serve him well in a role, and besides...didn't ALL of the "good-looking" male Healers usually attract the drop-dead-beautiful ladies?
His father, however, disagreed with his son's decision, and simply refused to let Renthan apprentice. No son of his would wind up in a profession "meant primarily for women, and no man with enough Faranth-given sense would perform the work of a male Green Rider who continually winds up under another man's furs." The boy wouldn't be denied what he wanted, and during one stormy night, Renthan snuck past the Guards and vanished.
He made his way to the Healer Hall, and fortunately for him, one of his tutors recognized him, and agreed to let the boy become an apprentice...and also shield him from his father's wrath.
By the time Renthan reached seventeen Turns of age, just before he was expected to walk the tables, a courier arrived by runnerbeast with a message specifically addressed to the young man.
His older brother had become ill under mysterious circumstances, and the Healer Apprentice was to return to Telgar Hold at once. Renthan knew that his father had never appreciated his taking up the role of the Healer, and had even gone so far as to permanently banish his tutor from the Hold. If his father was expecting him to step up and throw his training away in favor of learning how to be a "proper" Lord Holder, Renthan would rather go between first. He told the courier to deliver his response, and after dismissing him, Renthan set his jaw and was determined to receive his Junior Journeyman's knots.
It wasn't much later until the Searchdragon arrived, and didn't take long to pick out two Candidates whom it thought had what it took to become Riders. Surprisingly, Renthan was one of the two Candidates; and after receiving a letter of transfer from the Master Healer to report to High Reaches Weyr, he was all smiles as he made the trip to his new home.
It took some getting used to, juggling his Candidate classes with his new role as a field medic...but what didn't help was there were quite a few pretty girls in the class, and Renthan did what he could to impress them. The Candidate Master wasn't too pleased with some of the stunts Renthan had pulled, but otherwise was pleased with his progress. Although there had been one particular incident where he "accidentally" walked in on two girls who were "experimenting" with each other, and after some teasing and ribbing from them, was invited to join them...
Luckily for him, he wasn't tasked with examining either girl before it was time to Stand at the upcoming Hatching. He was also lucky that neither girl conceived, but it was somewhat awkward to explain why he had been walking with an unusual gait for a few days. As for the Hatching itself, a bright, vibrant Green dragon had Hatched from its egg, looked around, and made her way (Renthan was pretty sure it was a "she") and gazed at the Journeyman Healer, her rainbow gaze firmly fixed on him, and a soft, gentle, yet sultry female voice was heard in his mind. Arieth, the Green called herself, had chosen him and called him "R'en". Just as the newly bonded pair walked off the sands, R'en just happened to look up into the Stands and saw his father and mother sitting there. Lyrthan's face was a deep shade of red, and Renna's face reflected concern and worry. Arieth was quick to catch on, and reassured her bonded that she had chosen well, and that he wasn't to worry about what anyone else thought. They were a perfect pair. R'en, however, wasn't so sure, and his emotions soured when his father confronted him at the entrance to the Dining Hall, and shouted at him.
The young man had defied him twice before, and to be seen with a Green could only mean one thing - that his own son was, in fact, less than a man and would therefore be forever fated to sleep with other men. It took R'en all of his inner will to keep Arieth from attacking the Lord Holder, but a steady hand soon landed on the Green Weyrling's shoulder, followed by a firm, commanding, yet quiet voice. No one had the right to openly accuse a new Weyrling of anything, let alone decide what fate should be permanently cast for the young man. Furthermore, a Rider of a Green could sometimes have some amount of control over his or her dragon during a Flight, and not all Riders were men. Some, the newcomer stated plainly, were women.
Lord Lyrthan boldly challenged the newcomer, daring him to identify himself so he could report him to the Weyr leadership for interfering in what was a "family affair". The stranger identified himself as a Bronze Rider, a Wingsecond, who called himself "M'riel". M'riel also refused to let anyone -family or otherwise - yell at a Weyrling, especially one under his own watch, and gave his own challenge: Apologize and leave the Weyr quietly, or be escorted off the premises. Lyrthan shook his head, leaned in and told his son that he was no longer a son of a Lord Holder, that his only daughter would now be the rightful heiress, and left.
Renna, on the other hand, dallied just long enough to apologize to the Wingsecond, then kissed her son on the cheek and whispered in his ear just how proud she was, and knew that between him and his Green, he'd do well. Renna then hugged her son, looked at the Wingsecond and asked him to take care of her boy. M'riel promised he would do so, and the Lady Holder departed.
R'en and Arieth excelled at Weyrling training, and soon became good friends with another Green Rider - a female whom he had his eye on for quite some time. They made it through the training together, but part of him was disappointed as he knew Green Riders never were together during a Dragonflight. Time soon passed, and it wasn't long until another woman had caught R'en's attention, and this one was a Blue Rider. R'en developed a deep friendship with the female Blue Rider, and managed to maintain his friendship with the other woman without too much risk. This camaraderie and commitment R'en had with both women would only grow stronger, as it seemed the Blue Rider's dragon was chosen time and time again by his own Arieth and the other woman's Green during their respective Dragonflights...even though it was difficult to explain to the Weyr leadership just how or why the three of them were found the following morning under the furs together. On one occasion, M'riel simply shook his head and gave the younger Rider a smack on the back of his head before giving him an informal dressing-down. R'en was a talented Rider, true, and even though in M'riel's opinion you never wasted good; the Wingsecond didn't care how or why it happened. Keep focused on what matters the most, the Bronze Rider admonished the younger man, and become the best Rider he could be...and stay away from the designated room when someone else's Flight took place. (Of course, R'en surreptitiously disregarded M'riel's orders, and still found a way to wind up under the furs with both women at the same time, Flight or not...he was just more careful to ensure that he wasn't seen leaving the room.)
Some time later, R'en was asked to join a group of Riders - led by M'riel, the new Wingleader - to go back 200 Turns into the past and learn how to fight Thread. The field medic was already exhausted by the sheer amount of wounded and dead from the last deadly Threadfall; he and his own Green Arieth weren't exactly in the best shape, either. R'en realized, though, that this would be the only opportunity he or any of the others would have in order to save themselves, and agreed to go. Little did he or anyone else know that two of the Riders in the group had already made plans to steal a Gold Egg, and by the time they arrived at their destination, R'en knew there would be no going back.
