Personality: Liarna is a strong woman, able to take what life gives her without any prolonged fussing or complaining. She’s had to be, if only because of the way every trader’s life has its ups and downs. Part of what makes her so strong is her free expression of her emotions. If Liarna’s feeling particularly sad she’ll cry regardless of who is around to see her break down. She wears her emotions on her sleeve, giving her an acute self-awareness. That doesn’t mean she’s constantly running around crying or yelling. It takes a lot to move Liarna to tears. For any of the small events in her life that are displeasing, she generally lets them go without a second thought. To her mind, there is no reason to get upset over small things, as they happen often and to everyone. Most of the time, she is easy-going and pleasant. When she is getting upset, or angry, or whatever, she lets herself feel those emotions, and then moves on.
In the same way that Liarna will quickly move on after having an emotional reaction to something, she also doesn’t hold a grudge. Liarna will very quickly forgive people, so long as she feels they are sincere in their apology. If they don’t apologize for hurting her or someone she cares about, she’ll generally just ignore them. She’s decided life is hard enough without having to deal with people she’s not getting along with. Similarly, Liarna does what she can to avoid confrontation. She always tries to end any confrontation the quickest way possible, even at her own expense.
The one time she ever becomes stern and unshakable even in the face of confrontation is when she’s taking care of children. She had often been left in charge of looking after the young children in the trader caravan. Part of the reason she was assigned this task was because she was, even as a teenager, easy-going and emotionally stable. She could tell the difference between a little tantrum that didn’t require any reaction from her, and a big fit that required discipline, and what’s more she would react accordingly. She also enjoys being around children, finding them a refreshing change from the complications that surround adults.
Physical description: Liarna has tanned skin, dark eyes, and proportional facial features. She is about normal height for a woman her age, and is a little on the chubby side, but not overly so. Her hair is dark and wavy, and goes down to her shoulders. She always wears a scarf over her hair, sometimes tight around her head and sometimes left loose over just the top, held in by hair pins. She wears many layers of clothing, though none of them heavy unless its winter. She can always be found wearing a tunic, bodice, vest, cloth belt, a full skirt, and a skirt that has a large open slit up one side. She’s always wearing clothing of at least three colors, though often faded and old or of poorer quality. She just can’t afford the nice material. She doesn’t wear much jewellery, just a couple of bangle bracelets and beaded necklaces.
History: Liarna was born to two holdless people somewhere around Igen Weyr. She doesn’t remember much of them, except that her father’s name was Diern. Apparently when she was about 6 turns old, her parents went through a really hard time. They couldn’t afford to feed all of their children, and so decided to give the eldest, Liarna, away. She was old enough, they thought, that she could handle living without her parents. So they gave Liarna to the next trader caravan that passed, and Pimae and Jornar took her in.
Her childhood was spent learning how to be a trader. At first she just helped those old enough to have their own stands. Once she was 15 turns old, however, she was deemed ready to have her own stand, selling knick-knacks. Basically, Liarna started selling anything and everything that isn’t readily put into other categories. She was given a flit egg by her foster-parents four turns ago, as a reward for a particularly good sale she’d made. It had hatched a brown, which Liarna had named after her father.
Then there had been the plague, but that had mostly affected business. With the Weyrs closing down, Liarna and her caravan had lost some of their business. They had gone through a period where they had to scale everything back, though they hadn’t ever quite gone hungry. She had been worried that Diern might succumb to the plague too, but luckily he managed not to. But other then that, her life had been quite uneventful, until two turns ago.
Liarna had been keeping a secret from the rest of the caravan, she liked women. She had realized this when she was still a teenager, just a turn or so after being given her own stand. She’d kept her liaisons quiet and short, making sure no one found out. This had worked for her for turns, nearly a decade. Then two turns ago, when Liarna was 26, she had been found out. Jirnae had come into their shared room one evening to find Liarna and some holder woman together in Liarna’s bed.
Of everyone in her foster-family, Liarna was closest to Jirnae. Partly that was just because of their ages; Jirnae is one turn older than Liarna. But also the two just got along well. They shared everything with each other, except for this one secret. Sometimes Liarna wonders whether that is part of why Jirnae reacted to the whole thing so badly. Now Liarna and Jirane are more-or-less estranged; they barely speak to each other.
In fact, Liarna has been pushed out of the tight-knit trader caravan over these past two turns. The only reason she’d even been given Hisser a few months ago was because no one else had the time to take care of the feline. The entire caravan had begun to shun Liarna, leaving her more and more time alone. They didn’t hate her, and they weren’t cruel. They had just begun to treat her as an outsider. When the caravan stopped at Ista Hold for the Gather, her foster-parents suggested she might feel more comfortable staying at the Weyr with ‘people like her.’ Liarna was angry and heartbroken; she was still a Trader. She had a choice, either stay with the caravan that didn’t want her or try to find a place for herself at the Weyr. She chose the second.
Before they managed to make it to the Weyr, where Liarna would leave, they picked up a Journeyman Harper. His name was Fralon, but that was all Liarna ever really knew about him. She was so caught up in her own problems, that she more or less ignored the rest of the caravan, even this knew member.
Liarna would set up her stand one last time at this Gather, and then she would leave. She told the caravan she was taking not only her personal belongings, but also any of the items she had yet to sell. She needed a way to earn marks if the Weyr had no position open for her. So as soon as this Gather is over, if not before, Liarna plans on going to the Headsecond and asking about whether she can stay at Tristar.
Turns out the Weyr needed a Creche Mother, someone to actually run the whole creche. So Liarna took the position. Only about a sevenday away from the Hatching, she came into Weyr life. Her new life is a little disorienting, but she got used to it eventually. At least no one at the Weyr thought her odd because of who she goes to bed with.
She was just starting to feel really comfortable at the Weyr when the disaster struck. Luckily she kept her head and all the children who were currently in her care were evacuated safely. At Igen, she did all she could to help out the children that were still in her care. Their grief, she knew, was just as real as the adults' and perhaps felt even deeper. Few of them ever encountered anything quite as real as the earthquakes and volcano. Sometimes what they really needed was reassurance that it wasn't going to happen all over again at Igen.
To Liarna's way of thinking, the move from Igen to Izoku will only help the children. It was hard enough to console them after the disaster at Tristar, but the fact that the Holders kept attacking just made her job that much harder. Turns have passed since the disaster, but she thinks that perhaps it is only after moving to Izoku that everyone will be able to truly mentally heal.

Pet information
Name: Hisser
Age: 4
Type: Feline
Colour: Tan with black spots
Personality: Hisser is quite intelligent and loyal. He is quite the avid hunter of rodents. He likes to pounce on people, and can jump quite high. When he feels threatened he hisses; a trait picked up from the wild feline side of his ancestry. He can often be found lounging around the creche or playing with the children.
Physical description: Hisser is larger than most domestic felines as he was crossbred with a wild feline. He has ears that are a bit taller than most domestic felines. In all other ways he looks mostly like a regular domestic feline. He is also short-haired. (He is what the Terrans call a Savannah cat)
Name: Diern
Age: 8
Type: Flit
Colour: Brown
Personality: Diern is a calm and apparently thoughtful flit. He’s also quite inquisitive. He isn’t exactly smart, but he will try to think about something before acting. He rarely gets himself worked up, even when a green or gold is rising. Diern is quite loyal and enjoys being around Liarna, but does sometimes spend time away from her.
Physical description: Diern is the color of dry dirt. He does have a patch of darker hide, almost like wet dirt, on the top of his head. He’s about medium sized, with a proportionate tail and head.
