physical description:Arkadian is built like a bear. He is tall and broad shouldered and is the kind of person who is muscled without really having to work at it. He is pale-skinned, both naturally and from under-exposure to the sun. His short hair is a nondescript brown color and seems to always be sticking up in an unruly fashion. He also has a short beard and mustache. His face is square and serious looking and his eyes are blue-green. He doesn't seem to care much about what he wears as long as its clean, and he always looks tired. His favorite colors are gray and black, but he also likes bright orange, oddly enough.
personality:Arkadian is moody. He is usually serious, and cooly logical to the extreme. This is a defense mechanism he acquired after a hard life. Underneath that, with the few people he trusts, he is loyal, and has a mischievous sense of humor. He's probably above average with intelligence, especially on the math side, but he prefers not to let that get around. Instead, he cultivates a reputation of a grouchy aloof man who prefers to solve everything with his muscles. He can be very intimidating, and he often uses this to great affect. He doesn't like to ask for help when he needs it and is for the most part happy leading a solitary existence. However, he would never admit that he does get lonely and and at least part of him yearns to have a partner. He would do anything to help a friend, but he's not very good with showing or dealing with emotions. But he's rarely purposefully cruel. He expects a lot from himself and has a strong work ethic, yet he tends to expect the worst from others. He's often surprised by people who are actually good and kind.
Arkadian tends to blame all things that go wrong on himself, and believes himself to have a somewhat cursed existence. It's hard to argue with the man on that point. But he has a lot of regrets and tends to brood on them, and his self-esteem is not the greatest.
History: Arkadian was the second child of bluerider K'var and his weyrmate, a lower caverns worker at High Reaches Weyr. Unfortunately, K'var was a busy man and Arlina was an alcoholic, so he didn't get much in the way of decent parenting. In fact, as he grew, he was most often left in the charge of his older brother Levarlin, who was a bully and a brute. The older he got, the more withdrawn and antisocial he became, until he was ten Turns of age, when several things changed. Number one, was that his sister Arvania was born, and it claimed his mother's life. Arkadian did not miss Arkina, but he vowed to protect his sister from harm at all costs, a vow which he took very seriously, despite his young age. Number two was that his brother Impressed, taking him mostly out of the daily lives of his siblings. Number three was that his father also admitted, now that Arlina was gone, that he'd been having an affair with a green rider, and had another son, Kelevan, just three turns younger than Arkadian. The boys were a lot alike, and after a turn or do, they were close friends.
Now with the closer attention of his grieving father, Arkadian began to open up. Noticing that his son was growing into a strong young lad, he encouraged him to apprentice to the weyr's smith at age 12. Arkadian enjoyed the work both physically and mentally and he began to grow into the disciplined and hardworking man that he would later become. At age fifteen, he Impressed brown Bjornth.
He and his brown were a perfect match, and never were their lifemates more devoted to eachother. A'dan, as he was known then, was a much more open, loving and friendly person that Arkadian had been, and once he was through his weyrling training, this earned him the attention of some of the weyr's women. At age nineteen, he took greenrider Illuna as his weyrmate and it seemed that life could only get better, as he and Bjornth had already been promoted to a Wingsecond position. Also, in the intervening years, Kelevan had also Impressed, a blue named Tuegath. But then, three Turns later, tragedy struck. The plague swept through the weyrs, taking down dragon after dragon. First, his weyrmate's Coleth, and then Bjornth. And if that wasn't bad enough, while he was still prostrate with grief over the loss of his dragon, Illuna took her own life, and she had been pregnant with their first child.
Remarkably, his younger brother's dragon had been spared, and after Arkadian had recovered enough to travel, Tuegath flew him to the Telgar smithcrafthall, where he stayed, and threw himself into his work. But now, eight years after he lost everything, his father and brother have convinced him to return to the weyr. His experience would be needed, and furthermore, a wher clutch had been laid and there were eggs unclaimed. Despite reservations, Arkadian has been convinced to try for an egg, in hopes that it will help to heal the wounds to his heart and mind.
