Personality: Mitarlin, in spite of his age, is somewhat of an enigma. For the most part, he is very nice and respectful, but he can be very awkward around younger ladies. When it comes to being all business, he has been known at times be stern or lecture-minded. However, Mitarlin is typically quiet for the most part, often keeping to himself. He is very fond of storytelling, especially around young children, Weyrlings and young Riders. He does try his best to be mild-mannered for the most part, but can be charming and endearing on occasion.
Physical description: Mitarlin has a slightly heavyset, muscular build from many turns in Crom Hold learning miningcraft. His grayish-white hair is kept relatively short but stirs in a breeze. Thick gray eyebrows set above tired-looking light blue eyes. His skin is wrinkled from old age, but it isn't pale-white in color. Due to perhaps either his old age or a prior injury (no one knows for sure), he uses a cane to get around. The former Rider prefers wearing dilapidated-looking working clothes suitable for a drudge, but he does know how to dress appropriately for special occasions such as a feast or a gather.
History: Mitarlin was the only child of Mitrand and Linna; one a trader and the other a miner. He was apprenticed by his father at a relatively young age instead of being sent off to Crom Hold to the miningcraft hall, where most boys were shipped to learn the craft. (He wouldn't go to Crom until much later.) Due to his mother's love and diligence, Mitarlin learned basic counting, reading, and writing skills; she also made sure her son would learn some of the art of the Trading craft. Mitarlin was eventually Searched by a Searchdragon from High Reaches Weyr when he was just sixteen Turns but had to go through the Candidacy twice because he failed to Impress at his first Standing. Fortunately for him, he Impressed at his second Standing to Brown Tobalth, and whether it was out of pity or the fact he refused to become downtrodden, M'lin was appointed as Wingthird after he received his Riders' knots. Later, he would become involved in many Flights, eventually fathering five children: Arisia and Mitandar by Darisia of Green Adalinth; Mitella, Mitriel, Arilin by Ariella of Green Belindath.
When his son Mitriel suddenly disappeared when the boy was very young, M'lin was distraught and highly upset. He couldn't understand why his son would simply run away, or if someone had designs on kidnapping the boy. That fear turned into a very distant and cold attitude towards Mitriel after his return to High Reaches many Turns later when he became a Candidate. That father-son relationship with Mitriel was strained for many Turns; and just like many others that fateful day, M'lin lost his weyrmate Ariella during Threadfighting when Thread reappeared in the skies of Pern. M'lin would go on to lose his own Brown due to extensive injuries caused by Threadscore after M'riel led his group into the past.
Even though he was now Dragonless, but instead of giving in to that deep well of loss and despair, Mitarlin came to the realization that his Weyr still needed his help, and he would do whatever he could. Due to his mother's teachings, Mitarlin did whatever he could to get supplies to his home at High Reaches Weyr. But all that soon changed when various old hides surfaced from a remote place, an abandoned Weyr from a time long-forgotten. Those hides were old documents containing advanced strategies for Threadfighting, various notes from individuals, and well-documented records on what events took place...including a certain Gold Egg, the very same one stolen from High Reaches not too long ago. Two individuals were charged with the theft, but what had caught everyone's attention was whom had become Weyrleader during the twelfth month of Turn 1164. M'riel.
The Weyrleader of High Reaches (Turn 1364) vowed revenge, and set in motion plans to Time into the past to either recover that Egg; or if it had Hatched, the Gold Weyrling pair. He also wanted to make M'riel pay for the theft, and either bring him back to Turn 1364 to face justice, or defeat him and assume his position as Weyrleader of Izuko Weyr of Turn 1164. Mitarlin overheard this in secret, and came to the Weyrleader to offer his assistance in finding M'riel under false pretenses; what the former Wingthird wanted to do was to finally reconcile with his son after all this time, and to warn him and his Riders of the impending threat that was sure to come...
