The night was clear, the skies cloudless as the star and moons of Pern were reflected beautifully in the gentle sway of the waves that lapped up around the stony beach of Isuko’s welcoming Island. It was the most advanced part of the colony where buildings were slowly starting to be erected and a small harbour-like area starting to take form. This was the first place people saw when they came to Izuko, it was the home of all guests and candidates.
With Authanth’s last clutch on the sands and the hatching very near the candidates were currently staying up at the main complex, which resulted in very few people currently living around the Island. It was at this moment that the peace was broken by the ‘woosh’ of dragons appearing from between, a flight of 13 dragons adorning the skies in the simple ‘V’ formation that most wings flew in. The wing consisted of dragons of various colours, sizes and ages but it was the last dragon that caught ones attention, for he carried something in his talons. The unmistakeable form of a dragons egg silhouetted in the moonlight. The rider at the point of the ‘V’ turned around – obviously the leader of the group to survey his wing, checking that everyone was present.
A young rider on a small dragon – possibly green, glanced over at other one of the rider when she caught sight of the Wingleader looking back. She made a slight motion with her head that she hoped her fellow rider – possibly a brown rider, would notice. He did, pulling a face but then quickly turning his attention back to the front. There was no sense in giving the Wingleader a reason to get suspicioius not when they had come so far and the Egg was clearly held between the Skith’s talons.
The Wingleader, M’riel, narrowed his eyes a bit, his goggles made it hard to tell in the limited night light. But he could tell something was amiss with the riders at the back. Just what was happening up there, he thought to himself, but knowing he couldn’t do anything until they landed, he made the signal for the wing to land, and land they did, descending as one to the ground below. Upon the floor, M’riel looked around him again, taking in the sight of the welcoming Island as he did; It appeared quite inviting, quite...pleasant, perhaps their stay here wouldn’t be so bad afterall. Looking back, he appeared that the last two riders, and stiffened. Getting off his dragon, the Wingleader stalked towards the back anger rising inside him as he got closer to the two dragons only one of which was suppost to be here. He front in his tracks however when his eyes rested on the egg.. too large to be hidden effectively. “What in Faranth’s name have you done?!” He exclaimed looking at them with daggers in his eyes. Now they would never be able to go back home.. “Skith, move aside!” He demanded of the brown wanting to get a closer looking at this stolen egg...
Zalleah shrank slightly against her green when she heard the anger in M’riel’s voice. When her and T’rain had talked about this it had sounded like an excellent idea, but it sounded like something had gone terribly wrong. Eliath shifted closer to the brown as she lowered her head. “We’ve done nothing that they didn’t deserve,” she said softly, still upset that the Weyrleaders had been planning on splitting her and T’rain up. The young rider started to say more until she looked over at T’rain and her eyes widened a bit. “T’rain,” she whispered, her voice shaking. Now what had they done? She started to tremble a bit. They were in deep trouble now.
Even T’rain’s confidence faltered as he looked at what M’riel’s eyes had settled on. The egg had a golden sheen to it.. They’d taken the gold egg from the gold in the future. He could only start to imagine the pandemonium back at Home in High Reaches. M’riel’s face had turned stone cold as the Weyrleader stared at the egg and T’rain couldn’t even start to imagine what was going through his Weyrleaders head, at least, not until M’riel lunged forward and grabbed his shirt.
“Have you both lost your minds!?” M’riel shouted looking between each of them, never mind the fact that T’rain shouldn’t even have been here – they’d stolen the egg! “Cold kills eggs, how do you know that you havn’t killed that little gold?!” He hissed. “Now we’ll never be able to go home..” He growled. “You’ve just stuck us here..for good..” There was silence as his words were captured and understood by the others in the wing. “...and YOU!” He said turning back to T’rain. “You are not even meant to be here at all!”
“Gold?” Zalleah asked. How had they gotten a gold? They didn’t want to do that. They had only meant to make the Weyr regret their decision, not take a gold. Her face paled slightly. They had done everything they could to make sure the egg stayed safe. It wasn’t like they wanted to kill the little dragonet. It hadn’t done anything to them. They’d never be able to go home now? Were they ever going to be allowed to anyhow? It wouldn’t have been safe to try to get back to where they had come from. “It’s my fault,” she said, sitting straighter. “I convinced him to come with me. I wasn’t leaving him. It wasn’t right that I was forced to in the first place!” She was upset now. This wasn’t all their fault.
“Forced to?!” M’riel repeated looking at her as if she were totally stupid. “You were not forced to do anything, did you even bother speaking up?!” He asked her with a shake of the head, he could see that T’rain was getting agitated with him for how he was speaking to the green rider, this was precisely the reason as to why these two needed to be separated in the wings. “Enough.” He added, this was not the time or the place to get into arguments. “I’ll deal with you both later, someone’s coming.”
