M'riel couldn't say anything, trying his best to take comfort in Shayna's encouraging words. Had he reached his breaking point? If so, it had to have been during the last Threadfall he faced, the very same one that twelve others had likewise faced with him and survived. M'riel couldn't afford to let them down, nor could he afford to let his new Weyr down. His long Turns of training as a Guardsman and his instinct were now at war with logic and reasoning. He wanted to berate himself for falling this low, as it was completely un-Guardsman-like. He also wanted to kick himself for stumbling under the weight of his responsibilities, for letting so many other Riders down and unable to prevent their passing, for letting his first Weyrmate and daughter down.
At the same time, he had to come to grips with the fact he couldn't save everyone, nor was he completely invincible. Shayna was right - M'riel was only human, and he shouldn't face every trial and tribulation alone. Shayna also understood what it was like to lose someone you love; she had been Werymated once before, but lost him to the plague. Somewhere in the back of M'riel's mind, he wondered just how badly this plague had affected the dragons and their riders. He couldn't recall the specifics, as his mind was still reeling from the swirling emotions, emotions that slowly subsided once he heard someone was willing to help him. If he would allow her.
He felt her gentle kiss on his forehead, and settled for resting his head against Shayna's chest again, listening to her heartbeat. He was so exhausted from crying, he couldn't help but slowly close his eyes and relax, eventually drifting off to sleep.
