M'riel was caught off-guard as Tish grabbed his staff, and instead of trying to yank it from his hands, she used her own dexterity and fell back, taking him with her and sent him tumbling over. A grunt could be heard as he hit the ground, but Tish was quick to recover, getting on her feet and able to retrieve her quarterstaff. Shayna, meanwhile, went down to one knee and was leaning on her staff but managed to get back up and steady herself. The Weyrleader let go of his staff then rolled to one side, rising to his feet then looked at his two students.
"Exercise over," he said. Nodding at Tish, he continued. "That last move took me by surprise, grabbing my staff the way you did. A more aggressive opponent wouldn't have allowed you to do so. Just remember to use caution when you try it, otherwise you'll find yourself on the ground and at your opponent's mercy." M'riel then gave her a smile. "I'll get with Master Guard Dienon and have him take you through some of the more rigourous combat training. Before we get to that, however, there's one matter that needs to be settled. I know you haven't been formally Searched as a Candidate, Tish, given your...unusual...arrival to the Weyr. But rumor has it you possess a very rare gift to hear all of the dragons. I'd like for Duhath - that's Aquila's Blue, Tigrith - Ekaterina's Green, and one other Searchdragon to look you over. It'll probably be the Candidate Master's own Desanth, unless the Weyrwoman has another suggestion. Personally, I think you'll make a fine Candidate, but that's not for me to decide. That'll be up to the three Searchdragons to make that call, and the Candidate Master to give the final yea or nay."
He then turned to look at Shayna. "I'm sure you'll get me back for that welt on your leg, Shay, but I do believe I owe you an apology. Once we can get Sanyara settled, and we can schedule a meeting with our Searchriders about Tish; you and I need to have a little private conversation by ourselves so I can very sweetly apologize to you. And I do mean *private*," he winked at her, then wiggled his fingers. "These hands don't just expertly handle a staff nor hold the reins of a dragon, you know."
