Persona information (Updated: 5th January 2011)
Name: R'bao
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Watchrider/Searchrider/Wingrider
Birthplace: Telgar Weyr
Family: Mother: Laodra, cook, 49, now at Telgar Hold
Father: R'ban, wingleader, deceased
Foster-like son: Venteran, 4, Izuko Island
Significant others: Shayna of gold Josiath, 28, Izuko Island
Personality: First impression of R'bao tends to be that he is a quiet, thoughtful young man, and that isn't an inaccurate judgment. He is definitely a watcher, a listener, and a thinker. But he's also a schemer. He is very observant, very aware of what's going on around him... not just the obvious things, but the little things that can only be picked up by reading people and hearing the little things that they don't say. R'bao is very good with people, which can be both good and bad -- he is a good listener who is sought by many who are looking for sage advice, but he also knows how to talk and twist to get what he wants from people. Yes, he can be manipulative, but he isn't really out to hurt people, he's just a big believer in relying on one's own wits, and he is confident (perhaps overly so) that his wits are the best. His ambition stems from his confidence in his own abilities and from a constant sense of discontent with what he has. No matter how far he goes, in the back of his mind there's always another step just ahead, something more that he could do and be. Since the plague, he's been more of a comforting shoulder to offer advice of cheer than one to get his own way about things.
While the gears are always turning in his head, though, his ambition isn't blinding. He loves Weyr life, and while he may believe that things might be better if he just had a little more authority, he wants what's best for the Weyr, too. He is fairly social and has a low, pleasant voice and an easy smile that he shares often enough. He'll lend an ear for any problem, not just because he can use the information in some way, but because he genuinely has an interest in helping people solve their problems. He also comes complete with a vice: gambling. Though he's an avid, and talented, poker player, that isn't enough. He'll bet on hatchings, births, the night's dinner menu... anything. In his free time before Impression, he used to get riders to take him to runner races and canine fights to get a little piece of the action he craved. As a result, R'bao tends to be either very rich or dead broke, depending on how his evening went, though he saves as much as he can since the disaster at Tristar Weyr. And again, since the Plague, his gambling has become a quiet simmer, but can still be noted on occasion when the mood calls for it.
Physical description: R'bao has a naturally slender build and an active life has given him the smooth musculature of a runner or swimmer rather than the bruising bulk of a fighter. He is about 6' even, not terribly imposing in either height or build, but he has a good deal of "presence" because of the graceful yet undeniably confident way he carries himself. As a boy, he had been teased some for the long neck, long fingers, and sure steps that gave him an almost delicate look, but now that he has grown into a more masculine look and has proved that anyone who teases him will come to regret it, he no longer has that problem. He has short brown hair, slightly darker eyebrows, and dark, deep brown eyes. His face is long and expressive, the type that will someday show lines when he's still fairly young. Since Impressing Serguth, he's developed a bit more "rider muscle", but still holds his slender look.
History: Ranbao (pronounced so that it rhymes with "cow") was born at Telgar Weyr to a lower caverns worker, the son of a bronzeriding wingleader. He was a normal boy for the most part, occasionally getting into trouble, talented at his lessons, and attached to his own small group of friends. His father was distant, but kept an eye on him and his other children and offered support and encouragement when he had the time. Ranbao never had any doubt in his mind as to what he wanted to do with his life -- he was intelligent enough to realize how fortunate he was to have been born into the Weyr, and had no intention of throwing that away by doing something other than Impress a dragon. He was sure he had the potential to do well by Telgar Weyr if he just had the opportunity to gain some authority. His father encouraged his ambitions. When a few turns passed and no dragon had chosen him yet, R'ban surprised him with a firelizard egg. The man reasoned that it would help keep the boy's spirits up, and of course, adjusting to a bond with a firelizard might just improve his chances of Impression. It hatched a healthy brown that Ranbao named Mik, and for a while, training the firelizard kept him occupied.
The disintegration of Weyr life during the Illness disgusted him. He could hardly blame the dragonriders, who were all either losing dragons or nursing sick ones who later died, but he watched as things got out of control and no one stepped in to fill the voids left by dying Wingleaders and Weyrleaders. His dragonrider half-siblings, his father, and his friends all either suicided or left, one by one. Weyr residents left, the Candidates all began to leave, and Ranbao cursed them all for cowards. Now was the time when Pern needed good dragonriders most! Many of the Telgar Candidates were simply returned to their homes, but Ranbao didn't want to leave even if he had somewhere to go to. He heard that the last two clutches were to be moved to Ista Weyr -- or Tristar Weyr, as they were apparently calling it now -- and so contrived to get the attention of one of the few remaining dragonriders so that he could go there, too. Now was the perfect time for a talented, ambitious lad such as himself to seize the opportunity.
And he was right! Ranbao was needed as a dragonrider, to play a part in rebuilding the future of Pern, and the little dragon, Serguth, realized that when he choose him to be His at the first hatching of Tristar, giving him the honorific of R'bao. Since then, R'bao's attitude has changed more toward sincereness and he has become quite the hand about Tristar Weyr with his observations and Serguth's contentedness to watch the goings on as well as be part of them.
With the Weyrleader having changed from a brownrider to a bronzerider set in the ways of old, R'bao is a bit annoyed because the drills being demanded of them are grueling, but too much for his scrawny blue who is the typical blue that cannot last a full Fall even if he tried. T'jas' reign finally ended when the brownrider, M'cleod, took Leadership again, but devastation once again struck in the form of mysterious deaths.
It was in R'bao's 25th turn that his home was once again destroyed, but this time by a volcanic eruption and an earthquake. In trying to help save Josiath's clutch of eggs, Serguth was burnt badly by steam from the cracks opening all through the ground and rendered unable to fly for very long. The emergency evacuation was to Igen Weyr where he was among the last to go, hoping to save as many eggs as was possible.
Serguth healed and what they had saved of the clutch Hatched and Impressed, R'bao finding love in the WeyrwomanSecond Shayna and even took a liking to her son, sometimes claiming the lad as his with a proud smile. Now that they have moved once more to escape the Holder attacks, R'bao feels even more confident that all will be well before Thread falls again, his relationship with Shayna growing despite their dragons' colors, and Serguth beginning to show Search qualities...

Pet information
Name: Mik
Age: 13
Type: Firelizard
Colour: Brown
Personality: Mik is a bad-tempered creature, very much a one-person flit. He stays close to R'bao, usually on his shoulder, and glares at people. Though very well-trained to fetch and carry and usually obedient, he will not tolerate someone invading his personal space when he isn't in the mood to allow it. Usually he just hisses or puffs himself up to look dangerous, but if someone keeps poking at him or is loud or threatening, he will snap at them. Since the Plague, Mik has mellowed down a bit, but he's still just as much R'bao's as no other's and he'll make it known on occasion. He has gained a soft spot for little Venteran and Shayna, but he is still R'bao's alone.
Physical description: Mik is a large brown with a hide the color of rich walnut wood. He is somewhat pudgy both because he naturally tends to bulk and because R'bao overfeeds him a bit. His tail is short and a bit stubby, but he has a long neck and gracefully curved head.

Dragon Information
Name: Serguth
Colour: Blue
Age: 8
Birth place: Tristar Weyr
Sir/Dam: Bronze Mcnith/Gold Calrith
Weyrling Group: Phoenix Fire
Wing: Ground Shakers Wing
Personality: Serguth is a trouble maker, a dragon that likes to get into mischief, thinks it is amusing when he and his is are in trouble from the WeyrlingMaster, or whoever else is in charge of him. He only uses harmless play, but he sees it is a way to get attention from others, which he feels he wouldn't get enough of otherwise, and therefore does things for this reason, such as pulling semi-dangerous stunts, like diving at the floor, or taunting some of the other older dragons. His only problem is that he doesn't really know when to stop. He's a friendly enough dragon, seeking friendship from both his rider and other dragons, but he just tends to be somewhat annoying sometimes. Since he's matured, he's mellowed down a fair bit and has more of a responsible attitude now, but play is still not far away...
Description: A lean blue dragon, somewhat small in both height and build. He looks constantly under weight, and though he eats his fair share...when he isn't trying to get attention by not eating at all.. he's still skinny and scrawny. Sometimes it even looks like he's neglected, though everyone will know that's not the case. He isn't a strong dragon, not having the muscle there to make him that strong, which means that he'll never be able to last a full flight in the games or a Fall when it comes back around, but his small size helps him to maneuver easier. His hide is a light blue in most areas, however, its darker along his neck ridge and down to his tail. It's somewhat lighter in shading over half of his right wingridge and part of the sail, the whole length of his shoulder, and the upper part of his foreleg from the steam wound during the disaster at Tristar Weyr.
