Persona information (Updated: 9 May)
Name: Kalerai
Pronunciation: Kale-eh-righ (as in the "ri"-sound in right)
Age: 12
Gender: F
Sexual Orientation: UNK
Rank: Kid
Birthplace: 1152.3.12
Family: Mother: Kalee (d)
Father:Raiden (d)
Personality: Kalerai is an outgoing, friendly kid. She's inquisitive and smart for her young age and curious beyond belief. If there's a question to be asked, you can bet that she'll be asking it. The girl isn't one to typically keep to herself, and so is found hounding some poor soul for attention. Her love for the vocal and drawn arts is immediately obvious. She's not quite as talented when it comes to instrumental performance, but it's completely obvious that she's musically talented when it comes to singing. Her gifts at drawing are just as great, so it's not unusual to see her with something to drawn on and with, and what she produces tends to be fairly accurate in its representation. Currently, she's far more willing to be outgoing in showing off this particular gift. Her willingness to sing has diminished in the wake of her recent deafness. And with that, she's only become slightly more subdued. Quite frankly, it's not hard at all to label her a pest, but at least she's a loving one. And her love for all people extends to all creatures as well.
Physical description: Kalerai is of both average height and weight for a 12-turn-old. She's got a some-what skinny build, but it's not an under-weight, malnourished type of build. Her skin is a pale cream, from living in the north. Her face is round and still somewhat baby-ish in nature and normally sports a happy smile, with two slate grey eyes, and a relatively normal nose. Light brown hair is parted on the side and falls to shoulder length, with one side sometimes falling in front of her face. She very rarely pulls it back out of the way. Normally, she can be seen wearing a simple plain blouse and skirt ensemble.
History: Kalerai was born in one of Pern's northern mining holds, not a major hold by any means. Both of her parents, mother Kalee and father Raiden, were miners. Because of all the hard labor involved in their craft, the birth had some complications for Kalee and in the end, the healers determined she wouldn't be able to have any other children, so Kalerai stayed their only child. The girl displayed a sharp knack for harpering talents at a young age. She was able to sing quite clearly the teaching ballads, so clearly in fact that their regional harper, a travelling journeyman by the name of Lyte (short for Lytoner), realized quickly that it would be a voice valued by the Hall when she grew older.
And as that happened, he began to devote extra attention to teaching her the vocal basics. It wasn't until she was seven or so that her real gift was discovered. Lyte had no real artistic skill, but he saw that the young mine-hold girl could draw with amazing accuracy. When he finally got sent back to the Hall, he reported to them her gifts. The region's replacement harper, Taverel, was a harper skilled in drawing and painting, and decent at vocals as well. It was only then that she started obtaining real training, unofficial though it were, in her gifts. He was the first to label her a prodigy for her drawn works.
Life at the tiny miner-hall was ordinary. The adults went to work day in and day out. She went to classes with the other children, and then stayed for extra lessons, though only when the Harper was there. Her parents were somewhat possessive of their only child, though, and when, at the age of ten, Taverel tried to convince them to send her to the Hall where she could receive more, and better, instruction, they left their small hold for an even smaller mine-hold. There, she was the only child and was typically left to her own whims and devices. She began a drawing journal, doing what she could to stay active in the two things she loved. At night, when the miners settled to enjoy company, it wasn't unusual for her to provide songs. Taverel still came and taught her, when he could, but their new home was far enough out of the way that he couldn't frequently come by, or stay for long.
Then tragedy struck her, when she was twelve. Taverel had left the hold just a day before the explosion that rocked the little mine. There weren't any survivors, and as she was the only non-miner there, she was left an orphan and alone. But there was another tragedy that resulted from the mysterious explosion. She'd been close enough to the mine that the impact was enough to leave her deaf in both ears. Only time will tell if her hearing will ever recover. A sevenday later, a rider showed up at the hold and brought her to Izuko Island. And she can't wait to discover what waits for her here.
