I was a DM a long time ago when I was still in junior high (yes, I was one of those who played D&D to an extent; I even had six characters at the same time.) Anywho, since I admit somewhat that I'm a sucker for randomness, and would like to introduce a bit of skill/luck into the threads...
I had quite a few private conversations with Sorra and Kit about a possible outcome between R'en, Aquila, and Ekaterina; and another one with Sorra involving a possible outcome between Shayna and M'riel. They involved the use of dice, and I'd like to present the dice tables for use as a way of determining outcomes for various situations if they can't be agreed upon.
For example...
Roll for single/multiple birth(s); 1d100:
01 - 70 = Single, skip next section and proceed to Gender
71 - 100 = Multiple, go to next section
Roll for twins/triplets/quads/etc; 1d100:
01 - 65 = twins
66 - 94 = triplets
95 - 98 = quads
99 - 100 = 5 or more
Roll to determine gender(s); 1d4 per child
01 - 02 = male
03 - 04 = female
Chance of miscarriage/premature birth; 1d100
Base result:
Modifiers: See below (subject to final forum moderator approval)
Twin birth, +10%
Triplets, +15%
Quads, +25%
5 or more, +40%
Advanced maternal age (>35 Turns of age), +20%
Young maternal age (>25 Turns of age), +20%
Master Healer is on-site, subtract 40% from result
Field medic is on-site, subtract 15% from result
Journeyman Healer is on-site, subtract 10% from result
Note that base chance can never be equal to or less than zero (0), if so then modified result is set to 1% (minimal). Also, with multiple births it is likely that one or more fetuses will be lost if miscarriage occurs.
Allow me to provide an example of how this works:
Let's suppose one of Sorra's characters winds up conceiving. She rolls 1d100, and the result is 72. Multiple births. Moving to the next section, she now has to determine just how many littles she'll have. Again, Sorra rolls 1d100; the result is 63, which means her character will be having twins.
She then will roll 1d4 for each child; both results are 3, which means twin girls.
Now for the hard part; what are the odds that her character will suffer a miscarriage or a premature birth? Sorra rolls 1d100 and the result is high; it's a 70, which means there's a 70 percent chance something will go wrong during the term of her pregnancy. Sorra then adds 10 to the result (twin births), which brings the modified result to 80. Luckily for her, her character is only 27 Turns of age, so age won't be a factor here.
Also luckily for her, Eodira (Master Healer) and R'en (field medic) are both on the premises, and both of them have enough Healing know-how to help keep the pregnancy going along as smoothly as possible. Sorra subtracts 40 from the above result (80 - 40 = 40), then subtracts 15 (40 - 15 = 25), giving her character a 1 in 4 chance of a miscarriage or premature birth.
I haven't worked out all of the bugs, but I would probably involve the use of a 100-sided die for each month her character goes through the term of the pregnancy. That being said, Sorra would have to roll a 26 or higher each time (which is fairly easy to do) to keep things moving. If her character can make it to the 6th or 7th month, we start to look at the possibility of a premature birth instead of a miscarriage.
