Name: Rendel
Pronunciation: Ren-DELL
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Hetero
Rank: Sr Apprentice Harper / Candidate
Birthplace: (Birthdate. yyyy.mm.dd) Crom Hold, 1148.04.21
Family: Mother: Sira, 36 Turns
Father: Lestin, cotholder, 39 Turns
Siblings etc: Delucan, 18 Turns (brother); Lura, 13 Turns (sister); Rasia, 11 Turns (sister)
Significant others: None
Personality: Rendel is serious and focused. It is very difficult to ruffle his calm demeanor, and he rarely loses his temper or shows that he is stressed out or worried about something. He has the undeniable charisma of a true Harper, and his calm personality has a soothing effect on people. He is equally introverted and sociable--while he does like his moments of solitude, he loves people, and he would not be able to do without them. Everyone fascinates him, and he will sit and listen to anyone’s story. He also loves women in particular. As a young man, he was very flirtatious, but now he has toned it down a bit and his flirting tends to be more innocent.
He is very diplomatic and he strives to be nonjudgmental towards everyone he meets. If he does have a strong negative opinion about someone, he will reveal it only to his closest friends, if anyone. He does, of course, have his moments. Even though music is his life, and Rendel loves his craft with all his heart, he has learned early on to develop an ability to gather information about various people without being noticed. It has been said of Rendel that he could be literally standing in plain view but due to his introvertedness, he's often overlooked - and he has been known to use that to his advantage.
Physical description: He is tall, but not abnormally so, standing at about six feet tall. He has an average build, certainly not corpulent, but not noticeably thin either. He has a round face and wide, dark brown eyes. His face lights up when he smiles, and he has cute little dimples. He is naturally pale, but he gets a light tan if he has been out in the sun for a while. He has dark brown, slightly curly hair that always seems to be a touch messy. He keeps it short for convenience. He likes to wear fine clothing and his color of choice is, of course, Harper blue.
History: He has humble roots as the second son of a farming family who resided in a small cothold outside of Crom Hold. He has an older brother, Delucan, and two younger sisters, Lura and Rasia. His talent for music was apparent at an early age. As an infant, his mother could always cheer him up with a song, and when he was old enough to sing himself, he almost never stopped. His father helped him make his first lute when he was six turns old, and he spent hours learning how to play. His parents were never sure how they had produced such a talented son. His mother loved to sing and his father could play basic instruments, but their son had passed their skill level by the time he was ten. He was lucky to have loving parents and supportive siblings to foster his talent. At the age of twelve, he was easily admitted to the Harper Hall as an apprentice.
For the first few weeks, Rendel was extremely homesick, and he almost wanted to leave the Hall. Once he got used to it, though, he fell in love with the Harper Hall. As an apprentice, he wasn't able to easily overcome his introvertedness. But once he learned how to adapt, he made several friends and had a chance to harness his untamed talent with his boy soprano voice. He worked hard and impressed his teachers. His biggest challenge was his naturally reserved nature, which got in the way of his performances. Sadly for Rendel, his voice broke a Turn later right before he was to play a major role in a musical performance, and he had to withdraw as a result. The Masterharper, however, had other plans for the young Apprentice. It was found out that Rendel was able to quietly gather information on others without being noticed, and secretly the Masterharper took the young boy under his own wing. Officially, Rendel was reassigned to the Drummaster to learn the drum measures to communicate, but in truth the Masterharper kept a surreptitious eye on his new apprentice.
Rendel soon proved himself to be one of the more studious apprentices in the Drumheights, much to the annoyance of the others. He was often the victim of many a prank, and on one occasion even suffered a mild concussion after slipping on some greased steps. To his credit, however, Rendel was able to unmask a plot to discredit the Masterharper himself, and the guilty parties were dismissed from Harper Hall. But for the past three Turns, the young Harper has been trying to solve a more difficult mystery: Rumors have been circulating about a group of shadowy "dragonmen" that have been hiding in secret, hidden away from the rest of Pern only to venture out and strike at unsuspecting Trading caravans - yet not outright killing anyone in the process, only taking precious cargo and disappearing again. To complicate matters, the rays of the Red Star - long thought of as the stuff of old wives' tales - have inexplicably reappeared on the horizon, prompting the Harper to look through the Archives to find any traces of evidence of what this could mean, and if there is a connection to the rumors of the Dragonmen. His investigation soon leads him to an abandoned Igen Weyr, and it is there where he comes across proof that the Dragonmen do exist, and other groups are seeking their extermination.
It was during an expedition to the old Igen Weyr when two Searchdragons and their Riders from Izuko came across Rendel, and identified him as a potential Candidate. Choosing to keep the Dragonmen's existence a secret, Rendel returned to Harper Hall under the cover of night to gather his belongings and left without saying a word to anyone, then later rendezvoused with the two Riders so they could take him to Izuko.
