Ardalae stood up from her desk in her own weyr a few days after the flight, grimacing ever so slightly. She was still sore from her part in the most recent flight, if only slightly, and figured she would be for a few more days to come. Considering the events of a few days prior, she had decided to give the new weyrleadership pair space, but she didn't think that she could avoid either of them completely, or forever, and she was wanting to check on her friend. So after she finished putting away what she was working on, she headed over to Shayna's weyr, knocking on the door gently and waiting for a reply from inside.
Shayna had spent the next few days after the flight unable to get out of bed. Actually, either M'riel or R'bao had to help her up if she even needed to use the necessary. Despite everything they had tried she had still gone into labor early and been in labor for candlemarks as little Sanyara wasn't actually wanting to be born yet. Now, she lay propped up in her bed with Sanyara sleeping against her breast. She tried not to swell on the flight much as it had been a lot different from a normal one. She looked up when she heard the soft knock, but didn't want to bother Josiath to find out who it was. "It's open," she called softly, not really able to move much.
Ardalae heard the call from inside and carefully opened the door before closing it behind her quietly. With Copper's help, she found the weyrwoman resting in her bedroom, and waited a few steps away. "Hey, Shay," she said, voice quiet as Copper had showed her the little one sleeping up against her mother. "How're you feeling?" she asked quietly then.
Shayna listened quietly, trying to figure out the footsteps, but it was no use. Her tired face lit up though when she spotted Copper. She hadn't seen her friend since the flight and she hadn't exactly been able to get up and go find her. She had been worried when she had realized Ardalae had been the stand in for her and she had wanted to make sure that her and K'ryn were alright. "Hey Arda," she said, sitting up better, but wincing slightly. Shayna pulled a face, her black hair hanging loose around her face and dark circles under her silvery blue eyes. "I've felt better. Feel pretty useless at the moment," she admitted.
Ardalae gave her friend a smile, moving to stand by her side once she was greeted. The admittance made her smile and giggle some, but she shook her head. "You're not useless. We've got a weyrwoman again. The weyr needed a weyrwoman again," she said, as if that should settle the matter of her friend's perceived uselessness. "Besides, you've got the little one, and taking care of her makes you even further from such a thing. How is she?" she asked then, wondering about the baby as well.
The Weyrwoman was so glad to see her friend. She hadn't seen anyone but the Healers and M'riel and R'bao since the flight. Even her own brother and sister hadn't come to see her yet. Of course she knew they were both busy. "A very immobile Weyrwoman," she said with a slight smile. "R'bao and M'riel won't even let me do some hidework that I can do sitting her with Sanyara." She smiled lovingly down at her tiny daughter, still not able to believe she was there. "Oh, she's doing good. Eating every two candlemarks on the dot," she chuckled softly.
She managed to keep from frowning at her friend's words, though she understood completely where R'bao and M'riel were coming from when they kept Shayna from working. "Well R'bao cares for you a lot and M'riel...he's something else," she said, shrugging some, before looking back at Sanyara and smiling. "She looks absolutely adorable, and in perfect health too."
She nodded. She knew why R'bao was being the way he was. He doted on Sanyara, but Shayna still wanted to be able to at least look at the hides. She ignored Ardalae's comment about M'riel for just a moment. "Surprisingly enough for being so earlier she is doing extremely well. A bit on the small side yet, but healthy and happy and eating all the time." Shayna looked up at the younger gold rider. "Arda, how are you?" she asked gently, figuring the flight hadn't been easy on her friend.
"How early did she end up being again?" she asked curiously, before she heard the question that she had somewhat been hoping would get directed her way. Oh, all things considered, being a little sore herself was expected, and she wasn't completely upset with the entire ordeal. What she was upset about was the fact that they hadn't been able to stave off the birth longer. "I...I'm ok. I am sorry we couldn't keep her from being born early though..." After all, that had been the point. Hadn't it?
Shayna calculated in her mind how Sanyara had been. “She was about three months early," she answered. "Give or take a sevenday." She frowned a bit as she studied Ardalae's face. There was something the younger girl wasn't saying and that worried Shayna. She shook her head in answer to Ardalae. "None of this is your fault. Too many things happened and I plum forgot to talk to you about standing in for me. It was my own fault that I got caught up in the flight." She sighed softly. "Besides, Sanyara is fine and I'll be back on my feet in no time." At least she hoped. She knew she had lost a lot of blood during the birth.
Arda shook her head. "No, not really. It's mine and K'ryn's faults for not getting involved sooner," she countered. Of course, she hadn't placed any blame on K'ryn. No, in the end, she had been the one who had volunteered and showed up there and she knew that if she had done the job right, she would have gotten involved from the get go. Instead she had waited around, hoping that her weyrmate would show up, despite the fact that it was obvious that he was having issues somewhere else at that particular time. And three months was so early...she was surprised that the little baby had survived birth at all.

Shayna carefully reached for her friend's hand as moving was still a trick. She gently squeezed Ardalae's hand. "Don't take so much blame, Arda," she said gently. "Sanyara is here and safe. There's no telling if she wouldn't have come early anyhow. I had gone into labor before the flight, remember?" Somehow Eodira had managed to stop that one, but she had a feeling that her little girl still would have been born early even if Josiath hadn't rose. "And I thank both you and K'ryn for everything you did. I can kind of remember K'ryn being there." Her memories were kind of all jumbled together. She remembered M'riel's first amazing kiss and then things kind of started to get clouded.
Ardalae nodded, remembering that near scare they had had the first time around with Shayna going into labor. "Yeah, he was there too," she said, remembering his arrival before things had gotten...well she wasn't certain of a word. She knew that word to describe it could be awkward, though, despite not being certain entirely of all the details anymore, as the flightlust had taken charge shortly after the other bronzerider's arrival. Still, if she had gotten involved earlier, they might've been able to give the newest little one a few more days, or even a sevenday or two, where she belonged.
"So I really think my little one was just determined to come early," Shayna said gently. "There was no stopping that. Jo had a nice long flight, so that should be a good clutch and now we don't have to worry about the Leadership." Well, she had to worry as she was now officially Weyrwoman and that kind of scared her. Sanyara shifted in Shayna's arms, whimpering softly before settling back down. "Would you like to hold her?" she offered her friend. And she really was thankful to Ardalae and K'ryn. "I don't know how you talked K'ryn into helping, but I thank you both."
Eyes wide, Ardalae nodded at the offer, surprised that Shayna was willing to let someone else hold her newborn so soon after birth. "I very much would like to," she said then, before giggling some at the next statement. "Well...part of it had to do with the fact that I didn't want Zar chasing," she said, grinning then, though it wasn't at all the truth. "No, really...It was a matter of ensuring that I was there, and you had someone in case whoever won went to me instead of you, cause of the whole flight effects thing and everything, and then if he didn't, we were just gonna hook up, so...yeah..." It seemed pretty straightfoward to her.
Shayna smiled and moved enough to gently lay her still sleeping daughter in Ardalae's arms. The baby cooed softly and curled back up in slumber. Shayna smiled and lay back against the pillows again. She knew Sanyara would be safe in Ardalae's arms and the Weyrwoman needed a slight break as she knew it wouldn't be long before she needed to nurse the baby again. She chuckled softly. "I can't blame you there. I would want to keep him close to me too," she smiled, thinking that K'ryn and Ardalae were good together. She hadn't thought about the effects of the flight and blushed. "I thank you for sharing him," she said softly. She knew they were riders, but it was still awkward.
Ardalae gently took Sanyara from her friend, holding her up against her body carefully, blushing softly at Shayna's comments about her and K'ryn. That blush grew in intensity some at her next comments and she stayed silent for a few moments while she focused on the baby, feeling nothing less than adoration for the little life she held. "Yeah...I think there was a quite a bit of sharing..." she said finally. It was just her theory though.
Sanyara seemed content enough in Ardalae's arms. Thankfully the baby had proved to be docile if not a bit demanding. Although all babies were demanding, so Shayna couldn't complain. Shayna looked down at her hands and the loose shirt that she was wearing. She hadn't felt well enough to put much clothing on but the oversized shirt. "Hmm, I think you're probably right." She knew somehow she had woken up in M'riel's arms later that day, so she had no doubt that they
She grimaced some at that. "Yeah...honestly, I don't think I quite remember exactly what happened but...Yeah, I think there was probably join sharing going on," she said, shrugging some again before looking at the baby again and cuddling her against her body gently. "She's so adorable," she said softly then, still admiring the newborn.
The Weyrwoman sighed softly. She had no doubt there. And she could understand Ardalae's awkwardness. "I'm sorry you got pulled into that mess," she said gently. It would have been a lot easier if Shayna would have made time to actually plan for her flight. Josiath had risen early and her baby had been born early. Why was everything early? Shayna smiled a bit as Sanyara opened her eyes. "She is, isn't she?" she asked softly.
Ardalae quickly shook her head. "You have nothing to apologize for, Shayna. I knew what I was getting into when I offered to stand-in for you," she pointed out. And this flight hadn't exactly been normal, even without all the craziness that had happened afterwards. No, it had been bound to be a bit different from the get-go. "And yes, she's very adorable," she said again. Honestly, she wasn't certain that she could stop admiring the newborn.
"Thank you for that," she said gently. She was glad that Ardalae didn't seem upset with her. Although she still felt bad that the flight had gotten so messed up. The only good thing was at least Josiath had had a good flight. What happened with the riders hadn't effected Josiath and Oreath at all. Sanyara cooed softly, apparently not hungry just yet. Shayna smiled at her daughter and Ardalae, wishing she could move more. "a little one certainly changes a person," she said softly.
"Oh yes, I can imagine that it does," she said then, grinning at her friend. She doubted that she would have one any time soon, so she would just admire the the ones that her friends and the other people around the weyr had. Maybe she would even spend some time down in the creche on the occassion.
Shayna chuckled, remembering the first time she had held Venteran. "Well, you're welcome to visit Sanyara anytime. And I'm glad you stopped by. I was starting to go stir crazy." She wanted to be up and able to do things again, but Eodira would have her head if she even thought about trying. She was stuck in bed until further notice or she went insane, which ever came first.
"How much longer are you supposed to stay in here?" she asked curiously. Maybe she could find a way to help her friend out more than just holding a couple of days old baby every and now and then. Not that she wouldn't come by just for that either. Sanyara had captivated her attention.
Shayna shook her head. "My guess would be at least a sevenday longer. Eodira hasn't actually told me yet. Considering M'riel and R'bao still have to help me get up it's probably gonna be a while yet," she said with a frustrated sigh. She really hated being bedridden. She hadn't been like this with Venteran. But then again she hadn't endured a flight before hand either.
Ardalae thought about that for a few moments. There was plenty that the weyr needed doing, and the weyrwoman being bedridden for so long could put quite a delay on that. So she completely understood the frustration that she heard in her friend's voice. "Well, it sounds like you neede someone to do some work for you," she said then.
Shayna ran a hand through her black hair. She was really going to have to get Eodira to agree to at least let her do some hidework. She couldn't let things get that out of hand. Especially with a new Weyrleader. She looked up at Ardalae in surprise. "I really could use some help," she agreed, knowing right now she couldn't do everything on her own.
"Well then, my friend...Where should we start?" she said with a grin. No one could exactly complained about someone else doing Shayna's work for her, could they? Obviously Shayna would be giving her guidance on what to do with what and how, but ultimately, it would be her doing the final work. "Does that sound like an idea to you?
The Weyrwoman's silvery eyes actually lit up and she showed a bit of her old self before everything had happened. "Really? You'd help?" she asked with a smile. Oh, that would be great. Between the two of them at least they could get a few things accomplished. "I would be grateful for the help and thank you so much!" she exclaimed, causing Sanyara to whimper softly at the unexpected noise.
"Oh, oh, oh..." she said, hearing the whimper of the little one in her arms. "It's ok..." she said, trying to calm the baby back down before she got too upset, though she nodded at Shayna's question. "Of course I'll help. Just tell me what you want done, and I'll do it. I mean, might need some more than just what, but hey...I don't think anyone can complain about that," she said.
Sanyara slowly started to settle again and curled up against Ardalae again with a soft coo. The baby was usually easily placated. Shayna cringed when she realized she had upset her daughter. She had just been so excited for the help. "Hmm, well, we have the stores that need looked at and also see how the wings are doing," she said, thinking about what needed done.
"If I remember correctly, M'riel's started reorganizing the wings," Ardalae said, but she wasn't entirely certain about that. As for the stores, she would get on that after she left there. "Alright, what next?" she asked then, gently rocking the baby she held in her arms now that she had calmed back down again. She was so worried about doing something wrong and upsetting the baby that she was being extremely careful to not do that.
"Oh," Shayna said softly. She hadn't realized that M'riel had started working on the wings. Of course it shouldn't have surprised her. M'riel was certainly one who took his responsibilities seriously. She thought for a minute about what else needed done. "We need to figure out if we need to try to get a hold of the traders if we need things and also check in on the new weyrlings," she said, hoping she wasn't forgetting anything. Sanyara easily settled back down into a deep sleep.
"The only traders I've had any luck getting ahold of are our normal arrivals," she said with a small sigh. "Those ships should be arriving again very soon, within a few days I think, we another shipment of general supplies, but winter's setting in around Pern. Hopefully things with the other traders will look up soon," she explained, having already been on top of that. "And Searches are going as well as expected...which isn't all that well," she added then, shrugging. According to Lorina, the arrival of Kalerai and Arkadian had been the last candidates so far.
Shayna listened quietly to what Ardalae had to say. It sounded like she was certainly on top of the traders and supplies. Although it wasn't good news that she still hadn't heard from anyone else and the of course the weather was getting worse. She sighed a bit. "We may have to expand our Search perimeters." She didn't want to, but with three clutches on the way they were going to need to. "Mmm, that's not good at all. We're gonna need more candidates for three clutches," she said.
Ardalae nodded in agreement. "Yes, I know. But I don't think anyone exactly wants a repeat of Siarie and Sherath either," she pointed out. She was certain that the youngest gold pair was getting on just fine, but that was the problem. They were so young. Then again, one couldn't exactly stop the dragons from Impressing to whomever they wanted. "I think the biggest problem is the Holds still just don't see a point to the Weyr anymore."
"No, we certainly don't. How are they doing?" She hadn't had a chance to see them or the new wher handlers either. "And how about the new wher bondings?" She had had so many people that she had planned on seeing before finding herself bed ridden. She sighed in frustration. "I guess I should see about making a speech or maybe visiting the Holds myself. Somehow we have to make them realize that Thread is coming back and the Weyr is needed," she said softly.
"Last I heard, our new weyrlings and wher handlers were doing well," she said a bit tentatively. She hadn't heard in a few days, so she wasn't entirely up to date on everyone's progress. "As for the Holders, who knows what will get them to see reason, short of Thread falling on their heads," she said then, somewhat frusterated with the stone-walling the weyrs seemed to be facing. "It seems everyone has forgotten the ballads."
That was good news at least. She would certainly like to get down to see them as soon as she could. Shayna shook her head a bit. "It does seem like they have. Apparently they think since Thread hasn't fallen for so long then it's not coming back." She would have to think on that one for a bit. Maybe even M'riel would have a suggestion. "It sounds like you've been keeping up on everything pretty well then," she said with a smile.
"Well, there are all those hides you need processing," she pointed out with a grin then. Sure, she could keep up on those extra things, the various things that she had already been keeping up with before everything that had been going on. "In all honesty, I really wouldn't want to not be keeping up with everything, with M'riel as our Weyrleader now. Mac, I can see cutting slack. Him, not at all."
Shayna rolled her eyes with a laugh, ignoring the slight pain from moving. "Well, if you would like to bring those hides up to my weyr then we could work on them together when you have some time," she suggested. Maybe she could get Ardalae to leave them and she could work on them some too. She shook her head a bit. "It's going to be different with M'riel as Weyrleader. Hopefully it will be good though and now hopefully Mac can concentrate on Tae, the twins, and Nil," she said softly.
Ardalae nodded in agreement, moving back towards Shayna to hand the baby back over carefully. "Here," she said, smiling at Sanyara again. "Where do you keep some spare hides and writing stuff?" she asked as she did so. She would write down a list of all the hides that Shayna wanted her to bring up, so that she wouldn't forget something.
Sanyara seemed to sense that she was back in her mother's arms and the baby instantly started to whimper in hunger. Shayna shook her head with a chuckle. "I'll never know how she figures out that she's in my arms," she said as she shifted her daughter a bit. "There's some over in that stand by the couch," she answered, keeping hides in her weyr for emergencies.
Ardalae nodded and went and grabbed them, before sitting down in the nearby rocking chair. "Alright then," she said, ready to write and smiling as Copper settled down on her shoulder to act as her eyes once again. "Tell me which ones you want brought up and we can get to work," she added, one hand reaching up to scratch the brown's eye ridges as she waited.
Ardalae stood up from her desk in her own weyr a few days after the flight, grimacing ever so slightly.
